15-7-2014: Xiaomi Mi3 is fueled with Android 4.4 Kitkat out-of-the-box in India.

The Indian tech media is awaiting the launch of the Xiaomi Mi3 in the country for a tempting price tag of Rs 14,999. While the announcement is imminent, its time to pick analyze how well the device from the neighborhood will compete with the offerings from the local vendors. In an attempt to do the same, here we compare the Micromax Canvas Gold A300 that was announced lately for Rs 23,999 with the Xiaomi Mi3 to know how they both stack up against each other.

micromax canvas gold vs xiaomi mi3

Display and Processor

The Canvas Gold has a screen size of 5.5 inches which has resolution of 1920 x 1080 pixels. While the same resolution is carried by the Xiaomi Mi3, the handset has a screen size of 5 inches that results in a relatively higher pixel density. With this difference in the pixel count not being too visible, it is about the individual presence as to what display size you prefer to use.  Otherwise, both the screens use IPS technology that renders good viewing angles.

The Canvas Gold arrives with a 2 GHz octa-core MediaTek MT6592T processor that is a good performer. However, the Xiaomi phone is stuffed with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 quad-core processor clocked at 2.3 GHz that is better in terms of performance. Moreover, the latter is employed in a plethora of Android biggies making it a preferable option for superior performance. The RAM capacity of both the devices is identical at 2 GB and apparently, multi-tasking will be an easy task.

Camera and Internal Storage

The Canvas Gold incorporates a 16 MP rear camera with OmniVision sensor, autofocus and LED flash for enhanced low light performance. At the front, the handset uses a 5 MP snapper for making video calls and for clicking selfies. While these aspects look impressive, the Xiaomi Mi3 excels with a 13 MP primary snapper that has dual LED flash, autofocus, image stabilization and FHD 1080p video shooting ability. Also, there is a 2 MP front-facer that can also make FHD 1080p video calls. Obviously, the Xiaomi offering has an edge over the Micromax phone in the photography department.

The internal storage capacity of the Canvas Gold stands at 32 GB and it can not be expanded further. It has to be noted this storage is partitioned as 25 GB for mass storage and 1.5 GB for applications. In comparison, the Xiaomi Mi3 comes with 16 GB of internal storage option that cannot be expanded either.

Battery and Features

The Canvas Gold has a 2,300 mAh battery that is of lesser capacity compared to the 3,050 mAh battery in its opponent that is believed to pump in energy for long hours.

The Canvas Gold runs on Android 4.4 KitKat straight out-of-the-box while the Mi3 runs on Android 4.2.1 Jelly Bean. The handsets available globally have received the KitKat update and we expect the soon to happen soon in India as well.

Price and Conclusion

The Xiaomi Mi3 and Micromax Canvas Gold are priced in different segments, but comparing them based on specifications, the former appears to be a better performance oriented device. Well, the Mi3 comes with a capable processor, enhanced camera capabilities and a great battery. Of course, the Micromax offering is well suited for those users who want to try out their hands on latest versions of the platform that will have some new features and a larger display. As the advanced camera features, solid performance and finally a better backup are the main requirements from a smartphone, the Xiaomi would be a better option.
