Display and Processor

The display is where these two primarily differ. If Xperia Z5 had QHD display, we doubt that it wouldn’t have been possible to differentiate the two, even when compared side by side. However, the difference between the full HD panel of Z5 and 4K panel of Z5 premium was fairly noticeable, when both were placed side by side. The tradeoff of pushing 4 times as many pixels will be more power consumption.

Both handset are powered by 1.9 GHz octa core Snapdragon 810 20nm process based chipset with 3GB RAM and adreno 430 GPU. The chipset is capable of handling day to day tasks efficiently, even while pushing 4K resolution.

Camera and Internal Storage

Again there is nothing to choose from in both of these departments. Both Xperia Z5 and Z5 premium employ the same 23MP 1/ 2.3 Inch large size sensor with F2.0 wide aperture G Lens, which can record 4K videos.

However, you can Zoom in to a greater extent on the 4K Display in Xperia Z5 premium, while playing recorded 4K videos. Both smartphones list 32GB of internal storage with approx 24GB to spare at user end.

Other Features

Another important point of difference between the two is design. After all, It has been labeled ‘Premium’ for a reason. Z5 Premium indeed feels more premium when held in hand. Major credit for this premium feel goes to the polished rear surface which acts as a mirror, unlike the frosted matte glass finish in Z5. How much you adore this will be more a matter of personal taste.

Since Z5 Premium is pushing more pixels, you can expect its battery to drain faster as well. We will comment more on this after our full review. Software is same on both devices.

Conclusion

In our books, 4K definitely seems like an overkill on a 5.5 Inch panel. The more manageable Xperia Z5 strikes as a more reasonable option for all practical purposes. On the other hand, if you are passionate about owning the latest and greatest in tech, Xperia Z5 Premium scores by beating the Chinese rush and becoming the first 4K Display smartphone.
