Adding to the numerous devices from Chinese manufacturers that are present in the Indian Low-to-Mid range market today, Huawei has launched the new Ascend G6 smartphone priced at Rs.16999. The Huawei Ascend G6 had been announced earlier this year and is being touted as an affordable option for those who had been impressed by the Huawei Ascend P6 smartphone, yet are unable to purchase it due to financial limitations. Let us have a look at the specifications and features offered by the Ascend G6.
Camera and Internal Storage
The Ascend G6 sports a standard 8 MP camera on the rear with LED flash. While the primary camera comes off as pretty ordinary unit, what is surprising about the device is the presence of a 5 MP front facing camera. The secondary camera takes excellent pictures for a front camera, and would come of as very useful for those of us who like to take a lot of selfies. With all its recent launches, Huawei has taken due care of the front camera and this one is no different.
The device comes with an inbuilt storage of 4GB, which might be considered small for this price.A memory card slot is provided which allows the user to expand the storage using a micro SD card of up to 32 GB.
Processor and Battery
The Huawei Ascend G6 comes with a 1.2 GHz quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 200 processor, which might seem a bit disappointing as the same processor is available on devices priced much lower than the Ascend G6, such as the Lava Iris 406Q. The GPU attached is a Qualcomm Adreno 305 GPU. Accompanying this processor is 1 GB of RAM, which will prove adequate for multitasking.
A 2000 mAh battery is available with the device to fulfil the power requirements of the smartphone. The related stand by time and talk time haven’t yet been revealed but will become clear once the device becomes available in India.
Display and Features
The device features a 4.5 inch qHD Display with a resolution of around 960X540 pixels, giving it a pixel density of 245 ppi. The display quality is reasonably nice, but users won’t feel the same clarity they do on a 720p or 1020p display of the same size.
Huawei Ascend G6 comes with Android 4.3 Jelly Bean out of the box, and Huawei’s own Emotion UI 2.0 lite on top. While the Emotion UI is quite simple and basic, it gets rid of the Android menu and paste all apps on the home screen, much like the iOS, which is one feature some users might not like. Huawei has introduced a Selfie Preview Window feature for better selfies, and a Phone Manager app which will allow users to scan for problems, check settings and optimize the device.
Some of the direct competitors of this device its price range would be Samsung Galaxy Grand Duos, Gionee E7 Mini, HTC Desire 500, Lenovo S820, Nokia Lumia 720 etc. Most of these devices offer better or similar hardware not considering the excellent front camera of the Ascend G6.

Price and conclusion
The Huawei Ascend G6 comes with a price tag of Rs.16999. It is a device with decent hardware specifications and some excellent camera features. While the presence of the 5 MP front facing camera may entice some buyers, the availability of various other devices with similar Hardware specifications implies that the device will face some tough competition, both from other Domestic manufacturers, and from Global manufacturers such as HTC, Samsung, Nokia etc who all have existing devices with similar or better hardware features in the same price range.
