Lenovo P70 Quick Review, Price and Comparison

Lenovo has been making big battery phones for quite some time now, perhaps before all others. Every year we see a Midrange MediaTek SoC phone from Lenovo, with a capacious battery which is generally quite good. We liked Lenovo P780 in 2013 and Lenovo S860 in 2014. Next in line is Lenovo P70 which has been launched in India for 15,999 INR.

Camera and Internal Storage

Lenovo P70 comes with a 13 MP rear camera, well suited to its price tag, which can record 1080p full HD videos. The rear camera is accompanied by LED flash for low light conditions. The secondary camera on the front has a 5 MP sensor for detailed selfies. On paper, imaging hardware looks decent enough for the price.

Internal storage is 16 GB and according to Thedostore listing, you cannot expand it any further. This could be a deal breaker for power users. The P70 variant launched in china supported expandable storage. We will update this article after we confirm MicroSD card slot status.

Like most other Lenovo devices, USB OTG is also supported, which can be used for storing and directly accessing media content from external flash drive.

Processor and Battery

Processor used is 1.7 GHz octa core MT6752 processor with 2 clusters of Cortex A53 cores. This is the same chipset which is used in Lenovo A7000 and in Gionee Elife S7. We are yet to test the SoC ourselves but everything seems promising for this Snapdragon 615 challenger. Ram capcacity is 2 GB, which sounds good enough for decent performance.

Battery capacity is 4000 mAh. In spite of the huge battery, Lenovo has managed to keep the weight in check (149 grams). Lenovo highlights that you can talk nonstop for 49 hours on a single charge. Icing on the cake is, that rapid charging is also supported. You can charge the entire battery in 3 hours.

Display and Other Features

Lenovo is renowned for good quality IPS LCD displays and P70 comes equipped with 5 inch IPS LCD panel with 1280 x 720 pixels spread across it. Since it is an IPS LCD display, you can expect good colors and viewing angles.

Out of the box, P70 will be running Android 4.4 KitKat based Vibe UI. You can expect a lollipop update sometime later, though there is no official timeline for the same. Other features include Dual SIM card slot, Bluetooth 4.0, 4G LTE, WiFi and AGPS.

Lenovo P70 will compete with phone like Lumia 640XL, Asus Zenfone 2, Huawei Honor 6 and Xiaomi Mi4 in India.

What we like

  • MT6752 chipset with 2 GB RAM
  • 4000 mAh Battery

What we don’t like

  • Non expandable 16 GB storage

Conclusion

Lenovo P70 is a decent big battery smartphone which will be available for 15,999 INR on the official Lenovo store. Best buy price is expected to be lower than this. Interestingly, the handset is lighter and slimmer than S860 with the same battery capacity. If 16 GB storage is enough for you, Lenovo P70 isn’t likely to disappoint you.
