Amongst the plenitude of cheap copies and knock-offs of smartphones that are manufactured in China, there exist some manufacturer which are known for their excellent credentials that have been attained through good research and fine work done to implement that research. Oppo is one such manufacturer which has been producing very able devices for a while now.
Oppo had entered the Indian markets with their flagship Oppo N1 earlier this year. Now, Oppo R1S, a mid-range offering from the manufacturer, has been announced in the Chinese markets and is expected to be launched in Indian markets later on. Let us have a quick look at the specifications and features of this smartphone.
Camera and Internal Storage
The device will come with a 13 MP primary camera with 6 element, 1/3” Sony IMX214 sensor, LED flash and f/2.0 aperture. The front camera would be a 5 MP shooter perfect for video calling.
The device features 16 GB of internal storage, but unfortunately there is no mention of an external storage, which can be a bit of a disappointment for those users who are into high-end Android gaming or want to store a lot of Media on their devices.
Processor and Battery
The device comes with a quad core Qualcomm MSM8928 Snapdragon 400 processor clocked at 1.6 GHz and an Adreno 305 GPU, much like we have seen in the recently launched HTC Desire 816. This solid hardware configuration is further augmented by 1 GB of RAM.
The Oppo R1S will come with a 2410 mAh battery. While Oppo hasn’t officially specified the stand by and backup time this would provide, the battery is expected to last around a day or less.
Display and Features
This 5-inch device has an HD (720X1280 pixels) IPS LCD display, providing it a pixel density of 295 pixels per inch, which is quite sufficient for a mid-range device.
The R1S comes with Android 4.3 Jelly Bean OS and Color ROM 1.2 interface working over it. It also comes with 4G LTE support, as well as Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 4.0, GPS with A-GPS and microUSB.
Comparison
At the price range Oppo R1S is being launched, the direct competitors of this device are expected to be the newly launched HTC Desire 816, Moto X, Sony Xperia T2 Ultra, Lenovo Ideaphone S920 (8 GB), Nokia Lumia 1320, Hp Slate 6 etc.

Price and Conclusion
The Oppo R1S has been launched and made available for pre-order in China for about 2500 CNY, which gives its approximate expected price in India to be around Rs.25000.
While a device with hardware specifications such as these should be expected to do well in the Indian market at this price range, the lack of knowledge about Oppo as a premium manufacturer in India might lead to somewhat lower responses. The device will also face some good competition from other smartphones from major manufacturers with similar Hardware specifications, such as the HTC Desire 816.
Whatever the fate of this device, Oppo is likely to launch a device which will make its brand very much visible in the mid-range segment of the Indian Smartphone market, and provide the Indian consumer with a good alternatives in the process.
