Oppo R5 Hands on Review, Rotating Camera, Price, Features and Overview[Video]

Design, Build and Display

Even when you know it’s the slimmest smartphone, the realization for the same rushes in when you hold it in your hands. Slim phones tend to heat up faster and to counteract this OPPO has used a Phase shifting material inside which is supposed to maintain thermal efficiency.

At the rear side there is a very noticeable and ugly camera bump, but that’s a price you will have to pay for admirable camera quality. Another important thing missing is 3.5 mm audio jack, which won’t be as easy to overlook. You will have to use MicroUSB third party headphones or the ones that Oppo bundles in the box.

The 5.2 Inch Super AMOLED display is very good in quality with great brightness and colors. Blacks are dark and whites are great as well. As OPPO promises, the reflectance is also very low. On the whole, OPPO is using a good quality AMOLED panel.

Processor and RAM

The processor used is 1.5 GHz Snapdragon 615 Quad core 64 bit SoC aided by 2 GB RAM. The octa core SoC based on big.LITTLE architecture with 2 clusters of Cortex A53 cores is a power efficient proposition. Graphics will be handled with powerful Adreno 330 GPU and thus you need not worry about performance aspects.

Camera and Internal Storage

The rear 13 MP camera employs the popular Sony Exmor IMX214 sensor with f2.0 aperture, which can record 4k videos if you would want it to. You can also record 720p videos at 120fps. The front 5 MP unit has 80 degree wide angle lens can record good quality selfies.

Internal storage is 16 GB and you can’t extend it any further. This is a limiting factor which makes OPPO R5 best suited for basic and moderate users.

User Interface and Battery

Software is Android 4.4 KitKat with Color OS 2.0 on top. The software set is similar to all other OPPO phones with plenty of options and gesture support. OPPO didn’t talk about Lollipop upgrade at the launch event.

Battery capacity is 2000 mAh and we didn’t expect anything more because of the slim design. OPPO has however provided with VOOC fast charging on this one as well, and since you can charge it to 75 percent in just 30 minutes, you won’t have to worry much about battery life in day to day usage.

Conclusion

OPPO R5 is a very slim smartphone with a beautiful display and powerful hardware. In spite of the Phase shifting cooling material inside, we are little skeptical about whether OPPO R5 will effectively counteract heating. Everything else seems promising on the OPPO R5, which has been priced at $499
