Physical Overview

Like other phones in the Z5 family, Sony Xperia Z5 Compact follows the same design language, but materials used rob it of the ‘premium feel’ its elder siblings elegantly flaunt. The frosted rear glass which no longer attracts finger grease, and is something which we really liked in Z5, has made the cut for the Z5 compact too.

Fitting all that high end hardware in a compact form factor comes at a price too. The handset grows in thickness all the way to 8.9 mm and feels boxy. Nevertheless, all these minor flaws are rather easier to look past, if you love compact phones. On the whole, Xperia Z5 Compact feels lovely, though not premium.

The side frame is continuous without bulging edges and the 720p HD display feels great too. However, this year we would have liked to see how 1080p Full HD looked on the new Xperia Compact device.

User Interface

The user interface is much lighter as compared to what we are used to seeing on Xperia devices. The software this time is closer to stock android. Some notable changes include new camea app, new power saving menu and a new app drawer. We will dig our claws deeper when we get our review unit, but for now new Sony Software looks good.

Camera Overview

Sony has used the same 23MP Exmor RS camera sensor on the Xperia Z5 Compact as well, and we value this consistency. The updated camera app now allows us to shoot images in full resolution. We didn’t get to extensively test the Z5 Compact camera, unlike the Xperia Z5, but since the hardware is same, camera performance should be similar.

Competition

Sony Xperia Z5 Compact pretty much stands alone in its league. Only Sony is catering to audience which values compact form factor. Only competition for compact series were Apple’s iPhones, which have also scaled up.

Conclusion

Sony Xperia Z2 Compact is neat little colorful phone, ideal for those who value compact form factor. Since there are only 1280 X 720 pixels on board, we expect the battery backup to excel beyond what the rest of the Z5 family has to offer. We will reserve our verdict till we get to know it better, and that would need some more quality time with the device.
