Android O

Google has posted the final developer preview of Android O for eligible devices. The Android O Developer Preview 4 OTA is being rolled out, while the full system images are available as well. Users with eligible devices under the Android O Beta program can try this developer preview out.

Google had finalized and locked the API in Developer Preview 3. The DP4 consists of several patches and these final APIs that are going to launch in the final version of Android O update. According to Google, DP4 is the Release Candidate, so everything you see in this release will be what the final Android O update will look like. Between now and final Android O release, Google will be monitoring the update for any major issues so the final release is free of any major issues.

The Developer Preview 4 consists of some minor visual tweaks to the lockscreen and the status bar. There is a hidden easter egg as well, this time in the form of an octopus (signifying the Android version number, which is 8). Other than that, there are no noticeable changes in Developer Preview 4.

The devices which are eligible for Android O Developer Preview 4 are:

  • Pixel
  • Pixel XL
  • Pixel C
  • Nexus 5X
  • Nexus 6P
  • Nexus Player

The full system images can be downloaded from here.

Google is expected to launch the Pixel 2 and Pixel XL 2 featuring Android O later this year. Most reports suggest that the update will land some time in August, while the new devices are expected to launch in Quarter 4, hinting at an October launch. The new Pixel devices are rumoured to launch with Snapdragon 836 and 4GB RAM. The Pixel 2 will come with a 5 inch Full HD display while the Pixel XL 2 will come with a bigger display and Quad HD resolution.
