ARM Presents Cortex A17 big.LITTLE processor for Mid range phones

ARM today announced new Processor, Cortex A17, which it claims will provide today’s premium experience in mid range devices of 2015. According to ARM, this processor will provide up to 60 percent boost in performance over popular Cortex A9 processors. This means that the new Soc will be slightly superior to Cortex A12 announced last year which provided 40 % performance boost over Cortex A9.

The new processor has been designed keeping in mind the cost effective mid range mobile segment and ARM claims to provide that optimum balance between price and cost. The processor will be based on energy efficient 28 nm process technology.

The Cortex A17 CPU will be assisted by Mali T720 GPU, Mali DP500 Display controller and Mali V500 video processor. The Mali T720 GPU will support Open GL ES 3.0 API for graphics and has been designed for Entry level smartphones.

The Cortex-A17 processor is architecturally aligned with popular Cortex-A7 processor, enabling next-generation mid-range devices based on big.LITTLE technology (Same as Exynos Chipsets). The upcoming MT6595 Octa core chipset which was also announced today will feature 4 Cortex A17 cores and 4 Cortex A7 cores.

The Processor are part of ARM’s roadmap for 2015 where it estimates the Mid range market to grow many folds. MediaTek also announced that its next octa core chipset will be based on Cortex A17 architecture.
