Andy Rubin apologizes for Essential Phone’s customer data leak

The Essential phone which was in news earlier due to delays in shipping, now faces data leaks. Information of about 70 customers who had pre-booked the Essential Phone was mistakenly shared in an email group considering of other customers.

After this error was pointed out on Reddit, Andy Rubin took to Twitter and apologized for the error in their systems. Essential has offered one year of LifeLock protection, which is an identity theft protection service, to the customers affected by the leak of information.

Customer data leak

The whole case surfaced on a Reddit thread when a user pointed out that they got a mail from Essential’s customer care, asking for a photo ID as verification of purchase. The strange thing here was that the email was CC’d to other random customers who apparently reverted too and their mail was received by this user.

While some users were suspicious of this being an online scam, it eventually led to the cancellation of many orders. Essential is looking into the matter and after Andy Rubin apologizing on Twitter, the company is said to be taking measures to safeguard user data.
