Google Maps Local Guides

The Mountain View based search giant Google has updated its Local Guide program with a revamped reward points system and some extended levels. Before this update, the Local Guide allowed users an ascension up to the fifth level only. Now, there are ten levels that can be achieved by scoring points.

You earn points for rating some place, sharing reviews, photos, and knowledge on Google Maps. Each time you contribute, you earn points. Those points help you reach higher levels of the Local Guides. Different levels in the Local Guides program offer different perks, including early access to Google features and more.

When you reach Level 4, you unlock your first Local Guides badge and higher levels lead to some special perks and early access to Google features. Eligible local guides from level 4 to level 10 can earn a 3 month Google Play Music subscription and get 75% off on movie rental in Google Play movies. The deadline to level up to avail this offer is 31 August 2017.

Prior to this update, users could only accumulate a maximum of 500 points. So, once they reached 500 points, they didn’t have any motivation to continue with their contributions. To push users again, Google has added 5 additional levels allowing users to reach to a maximum level 10 by accumulating 1,00,000 points.

The following table shows how many points you will need to reach a certain level:

Level 6 1500 points Level 9 50,000 points
Level 7 5000 points Level 10 100,000 points

Google has also made changes to the points system. Adding a certain piece of information on Maps that has higher impact earns users more points. For example, adding a new place for the first time on Maps can earn you more points than writing a review.
