Today, Google hosted an event in India to launch the first wave of Android One smartphones that were made by Micromax, Karbonn and Spice in the country. Alongside the announcement of these smartphones, the search engine giant also revealed that it is planning to rollout the offline access for YouTube in India.
By saying offline access, it means that users will be able to save the videos on YouTube via Wi-Fi and watch them later when there is no connectivity without wasting data. Google will be rolling out this offline YouTube access in India in the coming weeks.
As per Google’s statistics in India, around 40 percent of the overall traffic on YouTube comes from smartphones and tablets. Hence, it appears like with the offline access of the video streaming service, Google is planning to increase this figure significantly. However, there is no official word from the firm regarding when the feature will be introduced and if it will be exclusive only to those users in India alone. Perhaps, it would be a welcome feature all over the world as well as it will save their data usage to a great extent. Also, it remains unclear on how the YouTu be service will be able to handle its advertising revenue model with offline access.
