Micromax Canvas L A108 Quick Review, Price and Comparison

Canvas L which got listed on Micromax’s official webpage yesterday is now available for purchase on Infibeam for 10,499 INR. The price is in line with what we expected but is it justified for the hardware that comes along in this price range? Micromax has offered several quad core Kitkat devices in budget price range with varying display sizes. Let’s see if Canvas L is any different.

Camera and Internal Storage

The rear camera has an 8 MP sensor and can record 720p HD videos. Those interested in selfies will have to remain content with a 2 MP fixed focus shooter at the front. The imaging hardware does see an improvement compared to other recently launched Micromax devices but is quite standard in this price range.

Internal storage is 8 GB out of which only 1.25 GB is available for apps and 4.91 GB for user data. This sounds disappointing as not all apps can’t be transferred to SD card and perhaps some preloaded apps will dump their data in the uApps storage area as well. The storage will suffice for all basic users but if you like to keep several apps on your phone you might be left wanting for more in the long run.

Processor and Battery

The phone is powered by MediaTek’s budget star MT6582 with 4 cortex A7 cores clocked at 1.3 GHz. Several phones like Wammy passion neo youth will offer you octa core MT6582 chipset at the same price range but considering memory and other limitations octa core’s at this price range won’t enhance user experience by a vast margin. Xiaomi Redmi Note with with MT6592 Octa core and 2 GB RAM is perhaps a better performance option, but good luck trying to buy one.

Battery capacity is 2350 mAh and Micromax lists 8 hours of talk time and mere 210 hours of standby time. That doesn’t sound much and we can expect around 3.5 hours of on-screen time with moderate usage.

Display and Other Features

The display is 5.5 inches in size, which is perhaps the highlight of this phone. The IPS LCD display resolution is only Quarter HD (qHD) with 960 x 540 pixels. The lack of pixels plunges the PPI count to 200 pixels per inches which means your text’s will be soft.

Canvas L runs on latest Android 4.4 KitKat, which is something we like on this device. Other features include Dual SIM (Normal + Mini), 3G HSPA+, WiFi 802.11 b/g/n, Bluetooth 4.0 and GPS.

Comparison

The phone will compete with phones like Xolo Q2000L, Xiaomi Redmi Note, Wammy Passion Neo Youth and Zenfone 5, selling in the same price bracket.

Conclusion and Price

Canvas L is a smaller improved variant of Canvas XL and is meant for first time Android users who are craving for a large 5.5 inch display. It will prove to be a good phone for first time android users, but If you plan on doing anything more aggressive, this might not be the device for you. In case you are comfortable with 5 inch Display, there several better options available in the same price range bracket, including Zenfone 5.
