Qualcomm announced the Snapdragon 855 mobile processor at the annual Snapdragon Technology Summit yesterday. The new Snapdragon 855 is the world’s first mobile platform supporting 5G and it is built on the 7nm process. It will be used in premium Android smartphones in 2019, including Samsung Galaxy S10 series, OnePlus and Xiaomi flagships.

The 7nm Snapdragon 855 chipset features a tri-cluster octa-core Kryo 485 CPUs, Adreno 640 GPU, faster LPDDR4X RAM, Spectra 380 ISP, and 4K HDR10+ video recording support, 5G connectivity and more.  It will take on the likes of Apple A12 Bionic, Exynos 9820, and Kirin 980. Let’s check out detailed features of SD 855.

Snapdragon 855 Features

The Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 features four Cortex-A76 derivative Kryo 485 Gold CPU cores arranged in three clusters. One of the four Kryo 485 Gold CPU cores are clocked at speed of up to 2.84GHz. The other three Kryo 485 Gold CPU can go up to clock speed of 2.42GHz. There are four Cortex-A55 derivative Kryo 485 Silver CPU cores that are clocked up to 1.8GHz for power-efficient performance. The company claims up to 45 percent faster CPU performance compared to the Snapdragon 845.

It features Adreno 640 GPU that is said to offer up to 20 percent faster graphics processing. The Snapdragon 855 comes with faster LPDDR4X RAM clocked at 2133MHz. The Snapdragon 855 supports 5G networks but it doesn’t come with a 5G modem, instead, it uses the X24 4G Cat.20 LTE modem that supports up to 2Gbps download speeds and up to 316Mbps upload speeds.

The chipset features an integrated dual-14-bit Spectra 380 ISP. It can support up to 20MP dual-camera setup or up to 32MP single camera. The ISP can also record videos up to 4K resolution at 60fps with HDR10, HDR10+, and HLG HDR formats. It supports slow-motion video 720p recording at 480fps.

Connectivity options include Wi-Fi ad/ay/ac/b/g/n (Wi-Fi 6-ready), Bluetooth 5.0 (aptX, aptX LL, aptX HD), GPS, GLONASS, BeiDou, Galileo, QZSS and USB 3.1 Type-C port. It supports Quick Charge 4+ fast charging tech. It also comes with dedicated AI cores.

The Snapdragon 855 chipset is expected to come in the devices in the first quarter of 2019.
