Samsung has patented a smartphone with a fingerprint scanner and the front camera embedded into the display. The South Korean giant is said to be working on the in-display fingerprint tech for a long time and now it seems they might launch a device soon.

In an attempt to make a fully edge-to-edge display phone, Samsung is planning to integrate not only the fingerprint sensor but also the front camera into the display. Recently, there have been many reports of companies working on a in-display fingerprint sensor.

If we recall, Chinese smartphone maker Vivo was the first OEM to showcase a smartphone with this feature at the CES 2018 earlier this month. Now, Samsung is supposedly working on their version of an under-screen in-display fingerprint scanner. Tech publication Lets Go Digital has found the latest patent filed by the Samsung at WIPO (World Intellectual Property Organization).

According to the report, Samsung has chosen to integrate the front camera and fingerprint sensor both into the display itself. As explained by the patent’s sketch, the display will have separate holes to make room for the camera and sensors. The patent filed by Samsung also shows another variant of the device, which has a notch at the top similar to the iPhone X.

However, just because Samsung has filed a patent for a phone with in-display fingerprint scanner and camera, there is still no surety that it will be launched in future. There have been many instances where companies file patents for a particular device or tech but it never comes to reality. This time, if the company actually launches it, we might see a smartphone with a screen-to-body ratio of 100 percent.

We had come across another Samsung patent back in November last year that also showed a phone featuring an under-screen fingerprint scanner. At that time, it was expected that it might be the flagship Galaxy S9 that could come with this feature, however, recent leaks have revealed that it won’t feature the in-display sensors.
