Amazon Fire TV Stick Launched In India At Rs. 3,999: Chromecast Killer?

Amazon has officially launched its Fire TV Stick in India. Priced at Rs. 3,999, the streaming device competes with Google’s Chromecast. As a limited time launch offer, the online mega-retailer is throwing in a cashback of Rs. 499 to Amazon Prime members. The offer is valid for both existing and new members. Besides this, there are some additional offers from Airtel, You Broadband, Eros Now and Gaana.com.

Amazon Fire TV Stick Features and Specifications

The Amazon TV Stick is a simple plug-and-play streaming device for your television. It uses internet to serve contents for your entertainment. You just need to plug it to HDMI port for your TV and connect it to power point using the provided charging adapter.

As the Fire TV Stick streams high definition video contents from the internet, it consumes a lot of data very quickly. So, Amazon recommends you to have an internet connection with at least 4 Mbps speed and preferably unlimited data usage limit.

If you buy the Fire TV Stick now, you will get 100 GB of free 4G or wireline (broadband) internet from Airtel for three months. You Broadband has an even better offer. It will give you 240 GB of data for a period of three months. Both new and existing customers are eligible for these offers.

Speaking of the specifications, the Amazon Fire TV Stick sports a quad-core MediaTek processor. This is mated with 1 GB of RAM and 8 GB of internal storage. It also has dual band Wi-Fi (2.4 GHz + 5 GHz), Bluetooth v4.1, HDMI output and a micro USB charging port.

It also supports Dolby Audio, 5.1 surround sound, 2-channel stereo, and HDMI audio pass-through up to 7.1 surround sound. However, the main charm of the TV stick is the Alexa Voice. With it, you can control your television through verbal instructions. Amazon bundles the Alexa Voice Remote free of cost with the Fire TV Stick. The Indian unit also supports Hindi voice commands.

The home entertainment industry of India is presently evolving at a faster than ever speed. Recently, Bharti Airtel launched its Internet TV service in the country and Reliance Jio is at the final stage of announcing their own IPTV set top box. Even though the Amazon Fire TV Stick shares some features with them, it’s main competitor is the Google Chromecast.

Pricing and Availability

As mentioned above, the Fire TV Stick costs Rs. 3,999 in India. It is currently available for purchase from Amazon.in. It will also be sold through Chroma and Reliance Digital stores across the country starting tomorrow.
