Moto X Quick Review, Price and Comparison

After the humungous success of Moto G, Motorola is all set to launch Moto X in India. The Moto X has received several accolades worldwide prior to its arrival in India. It was launched last year in August when Google was still running Motorola and thus has received the KitKat blessing earlier than most other high end smartphones. Let’s take a look at the hardware that this phone is offering.

Camera and Internal Storage

The primary “Clear pixel” auto focus camera carries (OmniVision 10820) 10.5 MP BSI 2 camera sensor, 1/ 2.6 inches in size. The size of pixels is quite large at 1.4 microns, which implies they can absorb more light for better image quality in low light conditions.

The sensor used captures RAW images using sensitive RGBC filter (which is rare) and then another chip used converts it to popular Bayer image processing format. Both the 2 MP front camera and the rear 10.5 MP camera are capable of 1080p full HD video recording.

The internal storage will be limited to 16 GB and 32 depending on the variant you choose. MicroSD card slot is not present on Moto X either.

Processor and Battery

Moto G is marketing an X8 computing system on Moto X which means 8 cores in total, but at the heat of the device you will find Dual core MSM8960 Pro Snapdragon processor which has 2 power efficient Krait 300 cores clocked at 1.7 GHz.

The GPU used is Adreno 320. Moto X also contains one natural language core and one contextual core for touch less control and Active display of which we will talk about later. Motorola has chosen to go with less number of good quality cores clocked at high frequency to get good performance without sacrificing battery backup. The performance is smooth without any lag, and has gone a long way in convincing people that they don’t need a million cores. (of course figuratively)

The battery capacity is 2200 mAh and this will last for one day of moderate usage. Motorola claims 576 hours of standby time and 13 hours of talk time.

Display and Features

The display size is comfortable to hold 4.7 inches and it’s a 720p HD super AMOLED display. The blacks and contrast on the display is awesome. The brightness doesn’t match that of Moto G which sports an IPS LCD display panel, but is still pretty good. The display is also protected by Corning Gorilla Glass 3.

In AMOLED displays each pixel is powered separately and there is no back light. So with features like active display which provide with notifications on lock screen AMOLED display was a necessity for Motorola as only the lit par consumes power.

The Active display feature provides you with app notifications on lock screen as well as with the option to directly jump to the concerned app without first unlocking the phone. The Active display is turned off whenever you flip the phone upside down or keep it in your pocket.

Touchless control worked quite accurately in the brief time we spent with the device. It will record your voice first and then configure itself. You can use a set of predefined commands to perfrom several operations. The most interesting one is “Whats Up” command which promts Moto X to read out all your notifications. You could use this while driving.

Comparison

Going by the expected price range, this phone will compete with the likes of Nexus 4, Galaxy Grand 2, Micromax Canvas Knight, Gionee Elife E7 and upcoming Gionee Elife S5.5. The phone is expected to out perform most of the rivals in the price range of 20K to 25k INR.

Conclusion

The Moto G is a great phone and Moto X is even better. We were impressed with the build quality and smooth performance during our Initial Hands On review. It is expected to launch for around Rs. 25,000 but if Motorola manages to keep the pricing below that, it would provide with pretty cool value for money and will be save from the Snapdragon 800 crowd lurking north of 25K Mark.
