MediaTek Unveils MT8215 Another Quad Core Chipset For Budget Tablets

MediaTek, the very popular Taiwanese semiconductor manufacturer has unveiled its latest chipset, the MT8215. The MT8215 embeds a quad-core processor based on the Cortex A7 architecture, much like the MT6589. The MT8215, however, will come clocked at a higher frequency of 1.5 GHz per core, whereas the MT6589 comes with 1.2 GHz of clock per core.

MediaTek have enjoyed huge success in the past, with their MT6589 quad-core and MT6577 dual-core chipsets. India, China and other neighbouring countries were the biggest consumers of these chipsets, and new MediaTek has become a favoured solution for newcomers in the market, thanks to the low-cost hardware which is also proven to perform well enough.

The newer MT8215 will again come with a PowerVR Series 5XT GPU like the MT6589. The MT8125 includes full support for 4-in-1 connectivity combo that converges Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 4.0, GPS and FM. The MT8125 also provides support for Wi-Fi certified Miracast which makes multimedia content sharing between devices easier. The chipset will have support for 13MP cameras, and full HD recording as well is rendering in 1900x1200p.

Almost every chipset introduced by MediaTek has been a major hit thanks to the low manufacturing costs and high availability, and we would expect the MT8215 to replicate the success. MediaTek claimed that they were the first ones to manufacture a quad-core based on the Cortex A7, so there’s enough innovation too.

Mass produced tablets shouldn’t take too long before they hit the shelves, with devices like the Lenovo IdeaTab S6000 to come soon, which will be based on the MT8215.
