Videocon A52 Quick Review, Price And Comparison

After the success of the A55HD, Videocon are back with the A52. The phone was launched 2 days back, i.e., on the 14th of August with a price tag of 8,390 INR. The phone is a mid-ranger with a dual core CPU, and carries a surprisingly large (for it’s section of phones) screen of 5 inches.

Among other pros of this device, the presence of Android v4.2 out of the box is seen as a superlative. Let us talk about the other features on this budget device from Videocon.

Camera And Internal Storage

The device comes with a standard set of cameras. These being a 5MP rear unit, and a 1.3MP front. This is something we’ve seen in many/most budget devices of late. The 5MP on the A52 for sure won’t be as good as a 5MP you see on a Samsung, but if you don’t set your expectations too high, you would be a happy buyer.

As far as the front unit is concerned, it is hardly used, so a minor shortcoming can often be overlooked. But Videocon have indeed done well to include a 1.3MP unit instead of a VGA, like we see on many other devices. The shooter should suffice for video calls, for most.

On the storage front, the device comes with nothing new. A standard 4GB of in-built storage coupled with a microSD slot which would let you to increase storage by up to 32GB. This is a common trait we see on most low cost devices. Users generally need more than the 2.2-2.5GB which is left for user files, so be prepared to get yourself a memory card.

Processor And Battery

The device comes with a dual core processor clocked at 1GHz. The make and model of this processor is not specified, but the price at which the phone sells at is a good enough reason to believe that the processor comes from Mediatek. We would assume it is either the Cortex A9 based MT6577 or the Cortex A7 based MT6572. We hope its the MT6577, since it is better in terms of performance.

The device comes with a very impressive battery of 2000mAh. Had the phone’s cost been above say, 10k INR, we wouldn’t have used the word ‘impressive’. However, at a price of 8,390 INR, the inclusion of a 2000mAh battery is a big plus.

We would imagine that the 2000mAh unit would take moderate to advanced users through one day.

Display And Features

The device again impresses with a 5 inch display, in a segment where most domestic manufacturers provide not more than 4-4.5 inches. However, you might feel that the WVGA resolution is a bit low for a 5 inch screen. You can’t expect retina-display quality out of it, you have to keep in mind that you get what you pay for.

There might be a little pixelization you might notice during using the phone for multimedia and the likes, but otherwise it should be just OK.

As mentioned previously, one major plus point with the device is the availability of Android v4.2 out of the box. It is heartening to see most domestic manufacturers go for v4.2 out of the box.

Comparison

Surprisingly, we’ve seen a handful of dual core phones being released in the market of late. Surprisingly because, we would’ve imagined most manufacturers would want to concentrate on 4 core devices more. Wasn’t the case, however.

Some phones which can be compared to the A52 in terms of hardware and price are as follows: XOLO Q700, which comes with a quad core processor, Sony Xperia M, Micromax A92 Canvas Lite etc. There are innumerable dual core devices from domestic manufacturers.

Conclusion

The device does seem impressive with the dual core processor and 5 inch screen. The only gripe that can be seen on the device is the low resolution which might be a problem for some. Otherwise, even the battery, and other specifications of the device make us like it. The build quality, however, still remains to be seen. But we were impressed by the A55HD to a large extent, and expectations with this new device are high as well.
