Right after launching the much anticipated Elife E6, Gionee, the fast rising Chinese manufacturer is back with another low cost quad core phone, this time the GPad G3. The G3 is the latest instalment from their popular GPad series, and comes with powerful internals at a sub-10k INR price point. As we all know, the Indian market is flooded with budget quad core devices. Will the GPad G3 be able to make a mark in this case?
Camera and Internal Storage
The phone comes with a standard camera set you would expect in the segment. This comprises of a 5MP rear unit with LED flash on the rear of the device, and a VGA unit at the front for video calls.
Most other devices come with the same specifications in terms of the camera, while some offer 8MP units at the rear. However, we expect the Gpad G3 to have a better camera performance than the competition because Gionee are known to use better quality components on their devices.
The phone comes with a standard 4GB of ROM, which is probably the best you can get for the price. The device does have a microSD slot for expansion of memory by up to 32GB.
Processor and Battery
The device will come with the most popular low cost quad core processor, the MT6589 from MediaTek. The MT6589 has 4 cores running at 1.2 GHz each, and is powerful enough for an average user. The device, with its 512MB RAM, will be able to handle most of today’s apps without a lot of problem. However, game-heads might want to look ahead of the MT6589 if they want to play the latest games at high settings.
On the battery front, the device packs an average 2250mAh unit which will probably last about one full day for a moderate user. Heavy users will have to use power banks of spare batteries if they want go on for equally long, since the 5.5 inch screen might turn out to be a battery drainer.
Display and Features
The Gionee GPad G3 packs a 5.5 inch screen with an FVWGA resolution of 854×480 pixels. This is rather disappointing for this day and age, and those who are not on a tight budget are recommended to look for a device with a better pixel density. Movies and games will not nearly be as enjoyable as they are on a full HD or even a 720p display.
The device will be succeeding the GPad G2 which has a better specs sheet than the G3, but also sells for quite a bit more.
Looks and Connectivity
The device is among the better looking phablets in the market today. The protruding camera module on the rear in black goes well with the overall white (or any other) tone of the device. Plus, the build quality can be expected to be a notch better than what you see on phablets from domestic manufacturers.
On the connectivity front, the device packs 3G, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, GPS and FM Radio.
Comparison
The phone can be compared to other devices like the BSNL-Champion Trendy 531, iBall 5h Quadro, Wickedleak Wammy Passion Z, etc.

Conclusion
The device is an impressive one overall. However, the fairly low-res screen is the only gripe one can find. If you aren’t much into multimedia and gaming, you can consider the Gionee GPad G3 to be your next phablet. As mentioned previously, you will get the added benefits of directly buying from a trusted Chinese manufacturer unlike when you buy from a domestic manufacturer (which basically outsources manufacture to a Chinese OEM). This includes better build quality, better internals, etc.
