Spice Smart Pulse M9010 Hands on, Initial Review, Photos and Video

Spice mobility has launched its first smartwatch today in India priced at Rs. 3,999. This marks the beginning of domestic branded smartwatches in Indian market and Spice deserves some credit for being the first to churn something out for budget oriented consumers. Spice Smart Pulse M-9010 is powered by a MediaTek chipset (details unknown) and runs on Java based OS. In a world where Android Wear and Tizen OS devices are still to justify there significance, let’s see how far Spice Smart Pulse M-9010 can sail.

Design, Form Factor and Display

Spice Smart Pulse M-9010 is crafted from plastic. Spice has tried to give it a similar industrial design metallic finish as we have seen on Samsung Galaxy Gear, but the screws on Spice Smartwatch are faux screws made of plastic.

Samsung got rid of them in Gear 2 because several people didn’t like them, but that’s a matter of individual taste. Considering the price tag, the build quality won’t be much of an issue here, its fine. The Bluetooth headset and Earphones which connect via MicroUSB port, however are inordinately poor in quality and won’t be of much use to you. Spice has bundled 2 extra rubber straps for some customization.

The display is surprisingly good. Considering the price tag we were mildly surprised with what spice is offering in this price range. The 4 cm display has 240 x 320 pixels spread across it which again works fine for a smartwatch and at the bottom are 3 navigation softkeys for easy navigation.

Camera and Storage

Spice has integrated a VGA camera in Spice smartwatch which, needless to say won’t give you good quality images. We would rather use our smartphone camera for primary photography. The camera will however appeal to you in case you plan on capturing some secret spy shots but perhaps you will be exposed by your hand positioning.

Also if you wear it on your right hand, the camera will be towards the inner side and won’t be of much use to you. You can plugin up to 8 GB of MicroSD card storage to store songs, videos and camera images. Spice didn’t mention how much storage is available on board, but it will be fairly basic and you will need a MicroSD card.

Interface, Functionality and Battery

The Watch has four icons on the homescreen for camera, contacts, connectivity and dialer. Spice has provided with dual SIM functionality on the smartwatch which is peculiar because most people won’t be using a separate SIM card for their watches.

Spice Smart Pulse M-9010 accepts one SIM and one MicroSIM. We couldn’t test the sensitivity of the microphone in our hands on review but we will soon discuss more on that in our full review. Taping on home button takes you to some basic preloaded apps but you can’t install more apps. You can also browse internet and send SMS directly via Spice Smart Pulse.

The watch displays your smartphone notifications, but you can’t act on them. After pairing it with your phone, you can stream music, check call logs, read and write SMS and capture images remotely from your smartphone camera.

Battery capacity is 420 mAh and we don’t expect that to last very long with 2 SIM cards plugged in. Spice claims 3 hours of talk time and 2 days of standby time, which means you will have to charge it daily with moderate usage. This can be tad bit annoying because most of us aren’t used to charging our watches.

Conclusion and Price

Spice Smart Pulse attempts to be a smart phone on your wrist rather than being only a pairing device. The idea seems different but the modest hardware and less than modest accessories don’t implement it well enough to be really fruitful. You can buy Spice Smart Pulse from HomeShop168 starting 11th July fpr 3,999 INR, if you plan on wearing a basic smartwatch for a budget price.
