Build Quality, Design and Form Factor

Xiaomi MI3 comes with great build quality and a good design. It has metal like finish at the back with rounded edges which makes it easy to hold. The matte finish rear side gives a great grip as well in hands. Back cover of the phone cannot be removed but it feels great like metal however its better quality of plastic being used. It has a great form factor as being a 5 inch phone its fairly light at 149 grams and thickness is 8.1 mm which makes it not very thin but not very thicker as well.

Camera Performance

The rear camera is 13 MP can shoot HD video at 720p and 1080p at 30fps and can also record slow motion videos as well. Rear camera photos were great in daylight and they looked decent in low light as well. Front camera at 2 MP is capable of taking good selfie and can also be used to do HD video chat or video call.

Display, Memory and Battery Backup

It has  5 Inch 1080p IPS LCD display which looks great in terms of color reproduction and viewing angles are also good. In built memory is around 16Gb out of which around 13 GB is available to the user. You can install apps and store pictures, videos and other data on this storage.

Software, Benchmarks and Gaming

It has a custom UI called MIUI which runs on top of android and runs smoothly on the hardware of this phone, but yes does crash at times while launching some third party apps but not every time but might happen once in a while. In terms of gaming it did not disappoint us as it can handle HD games quite well without any graphic lag but heat up pretty quickly as well while gaming but still heating was not much of an issue.

Benchmark Scores

  • Antutu Benchmark: 30021
  • Nenamark2:  60 fps
  • Multi Touch:  10 point

Sound, Video and Navigation

Loudspeaker on the device is fairly loud and clear and the design placement of the same is also good as it does not get blocked in case you place it on  table. You can play HD videos without any audio or video sync issues. GPS location got locked in seconds so it worked perfectly fine with assisted GPS.

Conclusion and Price

Xiaomi Mi3 is a available as a 16gb model as if now for Rs. 13999 and you can only buy it from flipkart as it is not in retail sales in india. For the price this is one of the best phone you can buy as if now. In the first slot of the sales, around 10,000 phones were sold on flipkart. The second batch with more number of the units will start selling from 29th July 2014, the best way it go and register yourself so that you can get the device as soon as possible. Two things which we did not liked about Mi3 is heating issues which can be fixed with a patch and MiUi which needs to be fixed at certain places for which MI India has already started working as they are collecting feedbacks from the users using the Mi3 in india.

      • Hi Deepak and all,

My MI3 is heating up even while recording video in 1080P for 10 minutes.
It’s going up to 52 deg which is too high with 2G network/Flight mode.

I did check the processor speed. Only two core were running at ~1024Mhz(1 and 4) other two cores were in sleep mode. Even noticed core 4 is reducing it’s speed ~300mhz in frequent interval. so it should generate more heat if we run all the 4 cores.

I don’t expect a phone to heat while recording video without running any high intensive application in background.

Heating is happening at top section of the phone(front and back). Yes Qualcomm processor can withstand 85deg. How about display? and definitely it will affect the antenna performance.

I am not sure any one else facing this issue. confirm me. if you are facing it

  1. Hi, Can you recommend any alternative to Xiaomi Mi3, as it seems that its selling like a hot cake. Looking for an alternative with similar features as Xiaomi Mi3 or with a very minor difference

  2. when xiomi mi3 will be available on retail outlets? if this phone is provide so many things in this rate than why other companies r not providing these features at this rate? why huawei and gionee and other brand r not decreasing their set’s rate ? please clerify?
what about after sell service ? it has only 36 service centres in india . what will we do if we get any problem in set ??

    • Xiaomi follows a very different business model. The don’t make much profit from their smartphones, but get good revenue from themes and accessories they sell at Mi Store. The profit increases over time when cost of component decreases and thus they have longer launch cycles. This also means they can not make millions of smartphones at once. They manufacturer in small batches to keep cost in check and thus there is so much stock crisis. I think they will be providing good service and they will also benefit from the fact that domestic manufacturers don’t excel in this area. They have a hotline number for customer care as well. Number of service centers will gradually increase. Inquire about the nearest service center to your location before you purchase,

    • All work out on brand world is on brand that’s it… And if the manufacturing cost is less also they will price it more ..u will find plastic body in 20k mobile grand 2But no one comment on that … Because Samsung is brand

  3. Xiaomi’s Mi3 create huge sensation due to max features with least price but very disappointing for DUAL SIM user. Almost all company treat dual sim card user as a secondry customer & this thinking is very sad. This is not first time done by any company but always done by all companies. Whenver a very awesome moble going to launch you will found that it has only single sim card.

    • U can’t get perfect mobile with in your budget… If its then buy galaxy s5, know.. In every mobile there will be lack of something other wise all will buy that only one model from that company.. And u will not see s1s2,s3 s4s5 etc to get one thing u have adjust with other thing.. I want dual Sim in apple lol..

  4. Sir,
How is the camera comparison between Huawei honor 3c and MI3. Is Huawei Honor 3c is a better option. Whether MiUI has bug problem with google playstore? Which mobile has more ergonomic design?

    • We haven’t reviewed honor 3C yet so can’t compare both of them as of now. MIUI has some bugs but Xiaomi is quick with updated, nothing serious. Playstore worked fine on our device

  5. Hi,

What is the heating issue? Please let me know which to choose between MI3 ans Moto G.Is MI3 reliable,i got this doubt bcoz it is a chinese phone. Please do reply…

    • Yes it is reliable. The handset gets heated after graphic intensive gaming like most other phones. Its not much of an issue. in day to day activity and moderate gaming there is no heating.

        • Mi3 is better if you can buy it. But Moto G is no lamer If you are content with 4.5 inch display size it wont disappoint you. Also camera is better on Mi3.

    • a bit late but i have to write it … not reliable because it is a chinese phone … well you know all phones (including the iPhone) are made in china (ok not designed) and the Moto G is a Chinese phone too … (manufactured in china from foreign brand is no different than made in china from chinese brand …. Xiaomi is no cheap copycat brand) also motorola now : Lenovo (china) since google sold them.

    • while gaming its normal. can you tell me the temperature while browsing wifi using apps like CPU Z and numerous others

  6. Hi, Is it best time to purchase mi3. Bcoz when purchasing on high demand period, the quality of the product will not be upto the mark. Like Moto G released 2nd set of mobiles, that was not satisfiable when comparing to 1st set of mobiles. Can i have ur suggestions please?

    • Since Xiaomi is not ramping up the production for India stock, quality shouldn’t suffer. Most Moto G issues were solved with software upgrades. I think it’s as good a time as any to buy it

      • Thanks Mr.Deepak. and is there any identification code in a device to find the production batch. Can we expect any modifications in upcoming sets of mi3 ?

  7. Hi, I got my mi3 yesterday. The phones beautiful, but I have an issue with Video Recording. everytime I playback the recorded video there is a hiss sound in the background. Just wanted to check is there a issue with the handset ? I also recorded the same from other phones and I dont hear hiss.. sound.
