Going the LG way, Samsung has introduced the next smartwatch in it’s gear series, dubbed as Gear S, with a curved Super Amoled display. The curved display isn’t the only peculiar thing in this new smartwatch.
Hardware includes a large 2 Inch Super Amoled display with 480 x 360 pixel resolution, fueled by 1 GHz dual core processor and 512 MB RAM. Also includes is 4 GB on board storage, Bluetooth 4.1, MicroUSB 2.0, GPS and Glonass
The Gear S will have a SIM card slot, which will allow it to make independent calls and also avail 3G connectivity. In the era of Android wear smartwatches, Gear S will be running Samsung’s own Tizen OS with Nokia Here Maps for turn by turn Navigation.
Other preloaded stuff includes S Health app and Nike+ Running software which confirms Gear S as a fitness oriented device. This one too is IP67 dust and water resistance certified. A 300 mAh battery will be used to power the device, which according to Samsung, should last for 2 days of mixed usage; where as the list of sensors include accelerometer, barometer, gyroscope, compass, and monitors for heart rate, UV, and ambient light.
Samsung will also bundle a Gear Circle Bluetooth headset with the smartwatch which lets you receive calls and notifications or listen to music wirelessly. Gear S isn’t the first watch with a SIM card Slot we have come across (remember Spice Smart Pulse), but the feature was definitely unexpected in a Tier 1 branded smartwatch. Global roll out begins in October, 2014.
