Android Wear based LG Watch Urbane with Improved Metallic Design Becomes Official

Its debatable whether or not Android Wear watches are evolving in the right direction, functionality-wise. However, the watches are sure getting prettier. Yet again LG has started unveiling its portfolio ahead of consumer fest and has unveiled its metal luxury Android Wear device – LG Watch Urbane.

From the press renders, it won’t be completely out of place to call it a polished and premium LG G Watch R we saw last year. Innards are also similar to LG G Watch R, which was also the first complete round Android wear watch. LG Watch Urbane is powered by a 1.2 GHz quad core Snapdragon 400 processor, with 4 GB internal storage and 512 MB RAM. The dial is 1.3 Inch in diameter with 320 x 320 pixels (245 ppi) and LG is using POLED display for power consumption.

Other features include 410 mAh battery, Dust and Water Resistant (IP67) certification, 9-Axis (Gyro / Accelerometer / Compass) , Barometer and PPG (Heart Rate Sensor). Price and availability details will be unveiled at MWC next year. “The LG Watch Urbane’s classic design and smart features make it the perfect smartwatch to complement our G Watch and G Watch R, which were designed as more casual and active devices,” said Juno Cho, president and CEO of LG Electronics Mobile Communications Company. “LG Watch Urbane is an important part of our strategy to develop wearable devices that are worn and viewed as everyday accessories, not electronic gadgets.”

Total of 720,000 Android Wear watches were sold last year, which isn’t much. People do care about looks and design of what they slap on their wrist and perhaps that’s the reason why Moto 360 was in the lead last year. Functionality wise, perhaps, we will still have to wait for IoT devices with Android compatibility to be a common phenomenon before wearables become more meaningful.
