Unboxing

Samsung Galaxy J5 comes in a plain box, nothing flashy or crafty about it. Inside the box, you will find a SAR value certificate (0.808 W/Kg at Head), Quick start guide, a 1 Ampere wall charger, basic headphones and USB cable.

The handset is entirely made of plastic. Thick chrome finished plastic edges run around the edges (reminiscent of Galaxy Grand sereis). 5 Inch Amoled displays is something you can cherish in this price range. A physical home button is present below the display, flanked by navigation buttons on both sides (They are not backlit).

The plastic back cover is removable and SIM card slots and MicroSD card slots are housed underneath.

Camera Performance

The rear 13 MP camera and the 5 MP front camera are good performers. The 13 MP rear camera can click 9.6 MP images with 16:9 aspect ratio and 13 MP images with 4:3 aspect ratio. Low light images have ample noise, if you analyse them on a bigger screen, but you are covered for all social media purposes. A pro mode is also present in the camera app where you can control white balance, ISO and exposure. Colours reproduction is accurate and camera shots show good details.

You can record 1080p videos from the rear camera, the video clarity is good, but Auto focus doesn’t work very fast or accurately while recording videos.

This is a selfie centric phone, and the 5 MP front camera with LED flash does justice to this title tag. We managed to capture sharp and detailed selfies even in normal indoor lighting. Front camera performance is better than what we had expected.

Gaming Review

Samsung Galaxy J5 can handle moderate gaming without breaking a sweat, but stutters with heavy gaming. High end games are still playable, though you will notice frame drops. Stuttering was more while we played Riptide GP2 and Asphalt 8. Dead trigger 2, Blood and Glory worked very smooth.

With 20 minutes of gaming, temperature can rise from 40 to 45 degree Celsius, which is acceptable. Gaming experience for casual games is good, but the gaming performance overall is average. Gaming data can be transferred to SD card.

Conclusion

If you are short on money, but value Samsung branding, Samsung Galaxy J5 feels like a good option from performance point of view. We will be back with further analysis after our full review. Stay tuned.
