iOS 9 is Apple’s latest operating system for iOS devices like the iPhone and the iPad, it was released on September 16, 2015 during the mega launch event for the new iPhone 6s, 6s Plus and iPad Pro. iOS 9 improves a lot over the content introduced with iOS 7 and iOS 8, focusing on refining features, design changes, improving functionality, and performance enhancements. As always, the iOS release was awaited by most of us, we were keen to know the changes apple has introduced this time and the results were really satisfying. You will read about the new features and improvements we found in iOS 9.

Space Required To Update iOS 9

The iPhone users have previously complained about the amount of free space required when upgrading from one version of iOS to another. Apple has fixed this with iOS 9, asking for just 1.3 GB of available space, compared with the 4.6GB needed to upgrade to iOS 8.

Improved Search Options

Now ‘Search‘ box is available in Settings app.  New search bar in the Settings app that lets you quickly locate a specific setting by typing in what you’re looking for. Want Siri settings? Search for Siri, and all the settings options for Siri will be shown in a list.

Spotlight Search is revamped, swipe left or swipe down; you will find a universal search box which suggests apps and contacts most used by the user.

Photos & Video (New Photo Scrubber, Drag & Select, Hide Photos)

Newly introduced photo scrubber to go through the pictures. Now you can easily browse through your pictures simple by moving your finger over the scrubber. You can now simply drag and select multiple pictures from the gallery in one swipe. Moreover, the cooler part is hiding the pictures from the related album. The hidden pictures will be removed from the selected folder but can be viewed in All Photos.

You can now choose the video quality in Settings > Photos & Camera > Record video > 720p HD or 1080HD at 30fps. This will help you save almost half of the memory on your phone, specially in the 16Gb storage model of iPhone 6 and 6S.

iOS 9 has new folders for selfies and screenshots in the Photos app. The “Selfies” folder aggregates all photos captured with the front-facing camera, while the “Screenshots” folder houses all screenshots captured by holding down the power button and home button. This small but important change makes it a lot easier to keep track of selfie shots and screenshots.

Mailing is now more convenient, creative and user friendly. Write on the attachments; now sketch, mark, draw on attachments in your email using the Markup and Reply. Also, you can attach and save attached documents in your mails directly from iCloud Drive.

Siri Is Now Faster & Smarter

With anonymous search, a far lower word error rate, and a universal search screen. Siri will now be context sensitive, much like Android’s Now on Tap.

The Siri has got a redesigned look and feel. Asking Siri to ‘remind me about this‘ while reading a web page or iMessage conversation will fill in the reminder description with details culled from that web page or the conversation and provide a link back to the relevant app.

If you have your ringer silenced, Siri will respond only with text displayed on the screen. To enable this feature, go to Settings > General and scroll down to Siri. Inside the Siri menu, tap on Voice Feedback. Change it from “Always” to “Control with Ring Switch.” Siri will still beep when summoned, but will not speak responses, only show text as long as your ringer is off.

Touch Accommodations

Touch Accommodations lets people adjust the sensitivity of an iOS device’s touch screen. This feature is largely targeted at people with motor delays, who may have problems tapping the screen. More specifically, Touch Accommodations is designed to help people limit the amount of spurious input from unintended touches.

When Touch Accommodations is enabled, there are several options that can be used to customize the experience. One example of this is Hold Duration, which allows people to define a set amount of time the screen is to be held before a touch is registered, this feature could be really useful for old age people using iPhone. On the other hands this feature is useful because it prevents accidental taps.

More Battery Efficient Features

Power users will be particularly pleased to hear that Apple has focused a great deal of effort on battery life with iOS 9. This will give users an extra one hour of typical use, based on a full charge.

You Can Disable Shake to Undo

You can now disable the Shake to Undo feature if you tend to trigger it accidentally by going to Settings > General > Accessibility > Shake to Undo. You don’t need to cancel the pop-up when the iPhone gets shaken accidentally while typing.

These are some changes that Apple implemented in the iOS 9. The new OS looks fresh and removes many of those barriers that iOS could not go through in the past. We have seen many of these features already available in Android, but Apple always has its own way of presenting things. The new iOS has a lot to offer but the initial version od the update has come up with a few glitches and surely not fit for work for now.
