Samsung Exynos 9 Series 8895 SoC Announced, To Power Galaxy S8 and S8+

Samsung Exynos 9 Series 8895 processor has finally gone official. The flagship processor comes with some futuristic specifications. It is the South Korean manufacturer’s first chip to take advantage of the ultra modern 10 nm FinFET technology. This will result in up to 27 percent performance increase and 40 percent lesser power consumption when compared to the 14 nm FinFET process.

It is almost confirmed that the Exynos 9 Series 8895 chip will power up the Samsung Galaxy S8 and S8+. However, the upcoming smartphones will also have a Snapdragon 835-powered variant. Both the chipsets are expected to be incredibly powerful and energy efficient at the same time.

Samsung Exynos 9 Series 8895 SoC: Specifications

The Exynos 8895 SoC has an octa-core CPU and an icosa-core (20 core) GPU. The 64-bit processor consists of four high-performance cores custom-made by Samsung and four power-saving Cortex A53 cores. The CPU is based on heterogeneous system architecture, which means all the processing cores can be active at the same time.

Coming to the graphics department, the 20-core Mali G71 GPU is simply fabulous. It is almost twice as fast as the 12-core Mali T880 of last year’s Exynos 8890 chipset. The Exynos 9 Series 8895 has the capability of recording and decoding 4K UHD videos of up to a whopping 120 fps. Speaking of the camera, the latest SoC supports up to 28 MP rear and front camera. It is also compatible with 28 MP + 16 MP dual lens setup.

Talking of the memory, the newly announced chip supports LPDDR4x RAM and eMMC 5.1, UFS 2.1 or SD 3.0 storage modules. Connectivity-wise, the Exynos 8895 leaves no stones unturned. It supports Cat. 16 LTE or 1 Gb/s download speed and Cat. 13 LTE or 150 Mb/s upload speed. GPS, GLONASS, and BeiDou are there too.

Commenting on the launch, the Vice President of System LSI marketing at Samsung Electronics, Ben Hur said,

“In addition to being built on the most advanced 10nm FinFET process technology, the new Exynos 9 Series 8895 incorporates Samsung’s cutting-edge technologies including a 2nd generation custom CPU, gigabit LTE modem, and more. With industry leading technologies like VPU, the Exynos 8895 will drive the innovation of next-generation smartphones, VR headsets, and automotive infotainment system.”

Samsung Exynos 9 Series 8895 SoC: Availability

Samsung has officially confirmed that the Exynos 8895 is already in mass production. The chipset will be first seen in the upcoming Galaxy S8 and S8+. The smartphones are expected to launch by the end of March 2017.
