Xiaomi Redmi 4A starts receiving Android 7.1.2 Nougat update

Chinese smartphone maker Xiaomi has started rolling out Android Nougat 7.1.2 based OTA update as Nightly build MIUI 8 to its budget device, the Redmi 4A. The phone was launched back in March this year with MIUI 8 based on Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow. Now, some Redmi 4A users are reporting on the MIUI forum that they have received the latest MIUI update with Nougat on their devices.

Xiaomi has also started rolling out Android Nougat based MIUI 9 Beta ROM to Redmi 4A last week. Now, the new update comes as MIUI 8.5.10.0 NCCMIED and it is of 1.3GB in size. Notably, it is a Nightly build, and Xiaomi releases it for random users to get feedback. Later, the same update is rolled out to all users as a Stable build.

Highlights of Update

The latest MIUI 8 Global update based on Android Nougat brings several new features to the Redmi 4A and optimizes some of its features as well. The update also brings the October security patch to Redmi 4A. Here are a few changes and optimizations.

What’s New

The update brings an improved layout and readability for search results in Contacts app. Now, virus scans and payment scans are merged with security scan. Further, it brings better blocklist rules with the possibility of separate rules for every SIM card.

One highlight of the update is bringing switch for turning battery saver automatically off when it is charged. Apart from this, there is a new display format for update logs in updater. You can now also search for apps in the dual app’s settings. The reading mode will now turn on and off at sunset and sunrise automatically. Finally, Mi Picks gets a new name and a new icon, Meet Apps!

Optimization

The update has also made a few optimizations to the existing features as well. The Cleaner app now removes empty folder in a much better way. Next, it brings protection from unintentional tapping for Dial Pad. Lastly, it also brings a newly redesigned home page.

The update is a nightly build and the stable update will be rolled out to all users if no critical bugs are found. Still, if you want to try it immediately, you can download the Recovery ROM file here and flash on your device. It is to be noted here that MIUI 8 doesn’t support some of Android Nougat’s features like Split Screen and Quick Switch. So, these features are expected to come with MIUI 9 update which is scheduled for early December for Redmi 4A.
