The Xiaomi Redmi 5A sports a dedicated microSD card slot which allows up to 128GB expandable storage. This is a good feature as you can use two SIM cards as well as a microSD card on the phone. It is a good offering for a budget smartphone.

Infrared Sensor (Mi remote)

The Xiaomi Redmi 5A comes with an Infrared Blaster. This means you can control appliances like your TV, Home theater, Air Conditioner and other electronics using the Mi Remote app via your smartphone. This is a simple and useful feature that integrates all your remotes into your phone.

Camera

While they are not the best cameras on a phone, the cameras on this device deliver crisp images. The phone features a 13MP primary camera with flash and a 5MP front-facing camera. The image quality is good and the camera retains the detail and originality.

The camera is also optimized in terms of user interface and functions. You get a variety of filters preloaded in the camera app so you can click creative images. The camera quality at this price range is excellent and unmatched.

Memory and Storage

The Xiaomi Redmi 5A comes has two storage variants. The first variant comes with 2GB RAM and 16GB internal storage. The second variant comes with 3GB RAM and 32GB of internal storage, which is excellent at this price range. In our testing of the device, we found that MIUI 9 helps optimize the RAM usage on the Redmi 5A, enhancing user experience.

We tested the base variant and in that, you get 16GB total storage out of which 11GB is available for use. There is also expandable storage option up to 128GB via a dedicated microSD card.

MIUI 9 and a Notification light

While the Notification light is a basic feature, it is a useful one and something that budget devices often lack. The Xiaomi Redmi 5A comes with a Notifications LED that turns on while charging and blinks when there are unread notifications.

The Redmi 5A runs the latest MIUI 9 based on Android 7.1.1 Nougat. It is an upgrade compared to the Redmi 4A which runs Android 6.0 Marshmallow out-of-the-box.
