Google Pixel 3a Vs OnePlus 7: Should you buy the Pixel 3a or wait for the OnePlus 7?

Google launched its latest Pixel 3a and Pixel 3a XL smartphones in India earlier this week. The first mid-range devices from Google feature mostly mid-range specs except for the flagship cameras that are same as the Pixel 3 series.

Google Pixel 3a price in India starts at Rs. 39,990. So, in the Indian smartphone market, the Pixel 3a series will compete against the upcoming OnePlus 7 which is also expected to come at a similar price tag. OnePlus 7 series is launching on May 14.

So, should you buy the Pixel 3a now or wait for the OnePlus 7? Let’s find out.

Google Pixel 3a Vs OnePlus 7

Design: Plastic Vs Glass

Design wise, the Pixel 3a looks similar to the flagship Pixel 3. It has a notch-less display with enough bezels on both top and bottom. There is a dual-tone matte glossy finish on the back panel, but, being a mid-range phone, it has a polycarbonate body.

In comparison, the OnePlus 7 will come with a premium glass back body just like the OnePlus 6T. It will also come with a bezel-less waterdrop notch display on the front.

Winner: OnePlus 7

Display: No notch Vs Dewdrop notch

The Pixel 3a sports a 5.6-inch OLED display with an FHD+ resolution of 2220×1080 pixels. The phone comes with a relatively old display type with the sizeable bezels and thus offers a lower screen-to-body ratio than other phones these days.

OnePlus 7, on the other hand, will feature a 6.4-inch AMOLED display with a full-HD+ resolution of 2340×1080 pixels. It will be a full-screen display with a small dewdrop notch on the top and it will offer more screen to body ratio as well.

Cameras: Flagship Vs Mid-range

Pixel 3a offers Pixel 3 like flagship camera performance. It comes with the same 12.2MP (f/1.8) rear camera as Pixel 3 with features like OIS, EIS, Night Sight, Portrait Mode, and Super Res Zoom, etc. Google offers an 8MP (f/2.0) front camera with this.

In comparison, OnePlus 7 will sport a dual camera setup comprising a 48MP (f/1.7) Sony IMX 586 sensor and a secondary 5MP depth sensor. It will also have features like Nightscape and Portrait mode. For selfies, it is tipped to come with a 16MP (f/2.0) camera.

Performance: SD 670 Vs SD 855

Pixel 3a is powered by a Snapdragon 670 chipset which is a mid-end processor with solid performance. It is further paired with 4GB RAM and 64GB storage.

In comparison, the upcoming OnePlus 7 will come with a flagship Snapdragon 855 processor which will be paired with up to 8GB RAM and up to 256GB storage.

Battery, Connectivity and Other Features

Pixel 3a packs a 3,000mAh battery with 18W fast-charging support. While OnePlus 7 is said to come with a 3,700mAh battery with 30W WARP fast-charging support.

Both the phones will offer the latest connectivity options, however, OnePlus 7 will lack a headphone jack. Lastly, the Pixel 3a comes with a rear-mounted fingerprint sensor while OnePlus 7 will sport an in-display fingerprint sensor.

Price: The key factor

The Google Pixel 3a has been priced at Rs. 39,999 while in comparison, the OnePlus 7 is expected to start at Rs. 37,999 in India. Also, OnePlus 7’s base model will offer more RAM than Pixel 3a.

Verdict

Google’s mid-range offerings with a flagship camera seem promising. However, the idea is ruined because of bad pricing. The Pixel 3a with its outdated design, mid-level performance, costs a lot more than other mid-range devices. So, if you are okay with decent camera performance, OnePlus 7 will be a better option with great performance and looks at this price point.
