Stop Google Assistant from Popping Up Randomly on Android
To begin with, we’d recommend trying basic solutions like clearing the Google app’s data and cache, uninstalling any new updates, or rebooting your Android phone. This will make sure it isn’t due to a bug or temporary glitch. However, if nothing works, follow the guide below.
1. Disable Google Assistant Completely
The easiest way to get rid of Google Assistant is to disable it. If you don’t find yourself using it, turn it off completely, following the steps below.
- Open the Google app on your phone.
- Tap the More button at the bottom right.
- Here, click on Settings > Google Assistant.
- On this page, scroll down and tap General.
- Finally, disable the toggle for Google Assistant.
2. Turn Off Hey Google Detection
If you want to use Assistant but don’t want it to respond to the “Hey Google” or “OK Google” command, you can disable the voice detection in settings.
- Open the Google app.
- Go to More > Settings > Google Assistant as shown above.
- Here, click on Voice Match.
- Turn off the toggle for Hey Google.
Alternatively, you can retrain your voice model to help Google Assistant pop up only when required instead of false detections. You can do so by tapping Voice Model on the same settings page.
3. Remove Google as Default Voice Assistant
Accidentally pressing the home button can also trigger the Google Assistant, which can be annoying at times. You can remove Google as your default assistant app, which will stop it from popping up.
- Open Settings on your phone.
- Go to Apps and notifications > Default apps.
- Here, tap Assist and voice input.
- Then, click on the Default assistant app.
- Select None, and you’re good to go.
4. Remove Microphone Permission for Google
- Open Settings on your phone.
- Go to Apps and notifications > See all apps.
- Look for the Google app. Tap on it.
- Click on Permissions.
- Select Microphone and set it to Deny.
5. Google Assistant Popping While Using Headphones?
If the Assistant pops randomly while you’re using headphones, it could be a specific problem with the headphones. In that case, you can disable Google Assistant access on headphones, as follows:
- Open the Google app.
- Go to More > Settings and tap Voice.
- Here, disable the toggle for Allow wired headset requests with the device locked.
