The concept of open earbuds felt a little gimmicky until I got the opportunity to test them on my own. While they don’t feel right at the start, you gradually find yourself biased towards using them more than conventional buds. I tested out one such TWS earbud—the TOZO OpenEgo—and here’s my review of what’s best (and not-so-good parts) about it.
TOZO’s OpenEgo Review
While testing Seattle-based TOZO’s OpenEgo was a new and interesting experience, it did take some time to get used to. The hype for open-ear TWS is picking up and this was the perfect opportunity to put these buds to test. The unboxing revealed a quick start guide, buds, its case and a charging type-c cable along with it. Let’s dive deeper into the review.
Design and Comfort
The TOZO OpenEgo sports a unique design that sets it apart from traditional earbuds. The open-ear concept allows for a comfortable fit that doesn’t fully block your ear canal, which means saying goodbye to painful ears. The earbuds come with a hook-like design that wraps around the back of your ear, with the speaker positioned just outside your ear canal. So you get to have your own party speaker close to you while being able to listen to the surroundings. Moreover, this design allowed me to listen to music or watch movies for a long time without any discomfort that comes with in-earbuds. Below is an image of me enjoying my planks with the TOZO OpenEgo TWS!
Sound Quality
Despite my inhibitions to its open design, the TOZO OpenEgo delivered surprisingly good sound quality. Using a 14.2 mm driver, the earbuds provided a well-balanced audio experience for all use cases – be it gaming, movies or music. The bass response is particularly impressive for open-ear buds, offering a punchy and defined low-end that doesn’t overpower the mix. Mids and highs are clear and articulate, making these earbuds suitable for various genres of music as well as podcasts and audiobooks.
However, it’s important to note that the open design might not provide the same isolation level as your noise-cancelling in-ear buds. Therefore, depending on your needs, this can be both an advantage and a disadvantage. While it allows you to stay aware of your surroundings, it also means that some audio quality may be compromised in noisy environments.
Connectivity
The TOZO OpenEgo features Bluetooth 5.3, ensuring a stable and reliable connection with your devices. The earbuds support multi-point connection, allowing you to connect to two devices simultaneously, which is a convenient feature for those who frequently switch between their phone and computer. The connection process is straightforward, and once paired, the earbuds reconnect quickly when removed from the case.
App and Gesture Controls
TOZO provides a companion app that enhances the user experience of the OpenEgo. The app offers various EQ presets and the ability to create custom EQ settings, allowing you to tailor the sound to your preferences. The app also displays battery levels for each earbud and charging case, allowing for firmware updates.
The earbuds feature responsive, easy-to-use touch controls. With simple taps and gestures, you can control playback, adjust volume, and activate voice assistants. While the controls work well, some users might initially find the learning curve for different gestures a bit steep.
