Coolpad recently started its India operations with the launch of Coolpad Dazen 1 and Dazen X7. The latter is a flagship phone selling for 17,999 INR, while Coolpad Dazen 1 is a value for money device competing where all the action has shifted lately. It will take on phones like Redmi 2 and Yu Yuphoria selling for the same 6,999 INR price. Let’s take a closer look.

Question – Does Dazen 1 have Corning Gorilla Glass Protection?
Answer – No, Gorilla Glass 3 protection is not there.
Question – How is the Display of Dazen 1?
Answer – Coolpad has provided with a good quality 5 Inch HD display in Coolpad Dazen 1. The display is sharp and text is crisp. Display colors and brightness are also very good. We would rank it better than Yuphoria display, but one rung below Redmi 1s. The color temperature is slightly on the colder side.
Question – How is the Design and Build Quality?
Answer – There is nothing to complain about in this segment either. It is not the lightest or the slimmest and is fully made of plastic, but it doesn’t feel cheap at all. Coolopad Dazen 1 comes with a soft touch matte finish back cover which can be removed to access SIM card, battery and MicroSD card slot. The hardware buttons give good feedback
Question – Are Capacitive buttons backlit?
Answer – Yes, the three navigation keys are backlit and you won’t have to solely rely on muscle memory while using your phone in dark environment.
Question – Is there any heating issue?
Answer – No, so far we haven’t encountered any abnormal heating in our time with Coolpad Dazen 1. While benchmarking maximum temperature we recorded was 39 degrees. Heating is limited to region around camera sensor.
Question – What comes inside the Box?
Answer – 1 Ampere wall charger, documentation, USB cable. There are no headphones in our review unit box.
Question – What size SIM card is supported?
Answer – Both SIM cards accept Micro SIM. Cellular video calling or call recording is not supported. Secondary mic for noise cancelation is present.
Question – Does it have LED notification light?
Answer – Yes, LED notification light is present. It lights up only when the display is asleep.
Question – How much is Free Storage?
Answer – Out of 8 GB, around 3.9 GB is available at user end. From storage settings you can set SD card as default location for storing apps.
Question – Does it support USB OTG?
Answer – No, USB OTG is not supported
Question – How much is free RAM on first boot?
Answer – Around 1.5 GB RAM is available on first boot.
Question – How is the Camera Quality?
Answer – Both front and rear camera of the device are average performers. The rear camera has very little shutter lag, though details and colors deviate from natural. In the respective price range however, it will rank high among the 8 MP shooters we generally see in low cost phones. we will spend some more time with the device in different lighting conditions and update our findings.
Question – How is the performance ? How much did it score on Antutu and Nenamarks?
Answer – Antutu score on our review unit is 20231 and 52.6 fps on Nenamarks 2. Day to day performance is mostly smooth, but we noticed some stuttering here and there. It is similar to most other Snapdragon 410 running phones in this regard, which means it isn’t blazing fast but good enough to get the job done.
Question – How is the device software?
Answer – Software is Android 4.4.4 KitKat based Cool UI. In aesthetics it is similar to most other Chinese ROMs. There are several customization options and features which makes Cool UI unique. Cool UI doesn’t seem inordinately heavy, but it is not as intuitive and as CyanogenMod or MIUI 6.

Answer – GPS locking is good for both indoors and outdoors.

Question – How loud is Loudspeaker?
Answer – Loudspeaker is reasonably loud, but sound gets blocked to a large extent when the phone is resting on its back.
Question – Can Coolpad Dazen 1 Play Full HD 1080p Videos?
Answer – Yes, the handset can play Full HD 1080p and HD 720p videos.
Question – How is the battery backup?
Answer – Antutu battery test score for Coolpad Dazen 1 was 5613, which is rather average. We were expecting a better score specially since a 2500 mAh battery is plugged inside. We will update this post with more info on the battery backup after we have used the device for a longer time.
Coolpad Dazen X1 is one of those rare phones which offer 2 GB RAM support for under 7,000 INR. The low cost factor has to be considered while judging it. It offers sharp display and pretty good hardware on paper for its asking price, but will have a tough time beating its rivals.
