Google I/O 2017 Keynote: Top Announcements

Google I/O 2017 Keynote is certainly one of the most important developer conferences of this year. The search engine giant has revealed a plethora of improvements and new features in the mega seminar held yesterday in California, US. Starting from the Android O Beta to the Android Go, Google has made some interesting announcements at the I/O 2017.

One of the primary aspects of this year’s Google Keynote is the implementation of AI (Artificial Intelligence) and machine learning. These two things will play an important role in our life very soon. Most of the popular Google products including Gmail and Android are rapidly adopting AI assisted functionalities. We shall talk about this in more details later.

This is the new generation Google Goggles. Loaded up with a powerful AI engine, the Google Lens will tell you about almost everything you point your phone’s camera at. Starting from a simple flower, to the SSID of your Wi-Fi router if can identify a vast range of objects.

First introduced in Google’s Inbox app, the advanced AI-based reply mechanism is now coming to the native Gmail application. The Smart Reply can generate automatic responses to your emails with the help of computer intelligence.

It is slowly moving towards becoming the backbone of Google. The AI-based smart assistant will soon be integrated into many core products like the Google Lens. The competitor of Apple Siri, Amazon Alexa, etc. now also supports text inputs apart from the usual voice commands. Although this sounds a bit backward, we can’t deny its usability at public places where talking to your phone may sound weird.

With support for active notifications, hands-free calling, access to movies, music, TV shows with visual responses displayed on your television, the Google Home going to be smarter than ever. For the last feature, you will also need a Chromecast though. Thanks to its proactive feature, you can now create reminders and schedule new calendar appointments on the Google Home.

New Find My Device App

The Google Device Manager is now renamed as Find My Device with a surfeit of improvisations and new features. As you might guess from its name, Find My Device is designed specifically to look out for stolen or missing smartphones or tablets.

The popular gallery app now supports Suggested Sharing, auto-grouping of pictures and Shared Library. All these three features are made possible by facial recognition and AI. The Suggested Sharing will remind you to share photos with the people who appear in them. The auto-grouping functionality is a smart photo organizer. Lastly, with Shared Library, you can set up your smartphone to automatically share any image taken of a certain person with him or her.

Google Photo Books

This Google’s premium printed photo album. Starting at a price of $9.99 (Rs. 650 approx.), you can order a gorgeous physical photo book with selected pictures from Google Photos. You may choose between a softcover or hardcover album which will be delivered to your given address within a few days.

Android O

Android O Beta

The successor of Android Nougat already has its developers preview available since March 2017. Here, in the Keynote, Google announced the various upcoming features of Android O, like picture-in-picture, notification dots, vitals, and lots more. The first public beta build of Android O has just gone live.

Android Go

Android Go

This a lighter version of the Android O. With the Android One program not much of a success, the Android Go aims to fill its part. They both are vastly different though. The Android Go is a special iteration of the mainstream Android OS explicitly designed to work with limited resources. It comes with Lite variants of resource intensive applications like Play Store, Gmail, YouTube, Facebook, etc.

VR and AR

Google has just announced that it is working on stand-alone Daydream VR headsets that don’t require any phone PC to work. The search engine giant also unveiled a Visual Positioning System (VPS) which is the indoor variant of the GPS. This will not only help in navigation inside shopping malls, or office buildings but also enrich the backbone of AR services like Google Tango.

YouTube

You can now view 360-degree videos right on your television screen without any fancy VR headset. The new YouTube smart TV app is required for this and you will be able to pan around the 360-degree footage using your TV remote.

Google for Jobs

Google For Jobs

Most of the employers and employees around the world search for Google at least once to look for their requirements. The search engine giant has started to build an extensive Jobs platform of its own as it already has an upper hand in this niche. The Google for Jobs will soon go live in the US and later expand worldwide.

Google Pixel 2
