Gionee has today introduced its new flagship phone – the Gionee Elife S7, with main focus on design and build quality. Our first reaction after hearing the price tag (29,999 INR) wasn’t positive, but on second glance, Gionee has provided plenty to justify the price tag. Will Gionee Elife S7 be convincing enough for users to shell out that kind of money?

Design, Build and Display
Gionee Elife S7 is crafted from aviation level aluminum magnesium alloy. The side edges have grooves running through them which, according to Gionee makes them incredibly strong. Gionee even took a few digs at Apple and said this durable design would never bend in your pockets.
In our time with the device we were instantly impressed by the build quality. The grooved side edges add to premium looks and comfortable feel of the device. The front and rear sides are covered in scratch resistant Gorilla Glass 3.
The phone resembles Elife S5.5 in girth, but this time Gionee has added several cooling areas and heat radiation materials to avoid heating. USB port and Audio jack are both placed at the bottom. The glass attracts smudges but feels premium.
The 5.2 Inch Amolded display is dazzling and sharp. Gionee has used ACL tech, which means Elife S7 will consume 25 percent less power than conventional AMOLED displays. Bezels are quite narrow on sides, but not so much on top and bottom.
Processor and RAM
Gionee is using 1.7 GHz MT6752 big.LITTLE octa core SoC, with 2 clusters of 4 cortex A53 cores clocked at 1.7 GHz and 1.3 GHz respectively. The chipset will be a worthy rival to Snapdragon 615, and we expect to see this a lot in under 15K devices.
A new Sensor Hub has been integrated into the chipset to collect sensor data, so that the CPU has to wake up 20% less often, in turn conserving battery. RAM capacity is 2 GB which should be good enough for decent multi tasking.
Camera and Internal Storage
Gionee has done a lot of research to fit in 13 MP rear camera without any ugly bulge. The rear camera can focus in 300ms. With Gionee’s new imaging system you can click 6 shots per second. The front 8 MP selfies camera can capture good quality selfies. Front camera software includes intelligent Face beauty 3.0 technology, to determine a person’s age, gender, etc. and recommend best beauty effects. Low light camera performance was also good in our initial testing.
Internal storage is 16 GB out of which 12 GB is available to users. Unfortunately, there is no option for secondary storage, which can be a deal breaker.
User Interface and Battery
Gionee Elife S7 features Amigo UI 3.0 based on Android 5.0 Lollipop. Gionee has added several optimizations to improve battery life. There is a dark theme too, which reduces power consumption by 30 percent as compared to default theme. Cellular video calling is not supported. We didn’t observe any interface lag in our time with the device.
Battery capacity is 2700, which is impressive considering the slim profile. With software and hardware optimizations and several power saving features, Gionee has managed to improve backup by 33 percent. The company also claims that the phone can last for 33 hours on standby with just 10 percent charge.

Gionee Elife S7 does everything right and if its battery lasts for two days as advertises, it will be a major advantage. Its impressive from engineering point of view, what Gionee managed to accomplish in limited space, but then several phones a couple of mm thicker are already offering as much. In a price sensitive market as India, it will be tough to make people spend 30K on a Gionee branded device.
