Build Quality, Design and Form Factor

In terms of design Unite 2 does not look very different as compared to some smartphones we have seen previously from Micromax. It has got decent built quality and material being used are again plastic and its thin quality of plastic being used on the back cover but it has the same matte finish rubberized back cover. However if you compare with its closest competitor, Moto E is slightly better in built quality. It has got a thickness of approx 8 mm which does make it thinner in comparison with Moto E and weight also feels light but again we could not confirm the weight of the device we tested, but it feels almost same in weight when compared to Moto E. It has got a good form factor with decent thickness and its easy to carry around and slide inside any pocket which makes it quite portable.

Camera Performance

IMG_8442

5 MP rear camera is quite good camera you can at price point. It can take much better photos than the Moto E camera both in close up mode and in long shots as well. It can record HD videos, has auto focus and LED Flash as well. Unite 2 also have a 2MP fixed focus front camera which is good enough for decent quality of video chat. As if now at this price point this device offer very good camera quality both on the video and photo quality department.

Display, Memory and Battery Backup

It has got a 480 x 800 IPS LCD display resolution which seems to be bright display but the color reproduction and clarity when compared to Moto E is on the downside but still saying all that, its not bad to look at or does not feel pixelated or bad unless you have Moto E on the other side. The display has decent viewing angles too and its readable in sunlight as well. In built memory of Unite 2 is 4 Gb out of which user available is around 1.67 Gb which is fairly less but on this device with the Micro SD card slot you can not only expand the storage but you can also set external SD Card as default write disk which allows you to install apps and games directly on the SD card once you insert it into the device. Battery backup is some thing which is decent if not too great, it can give you one day of battery backup with moderate usage which does not include lot of game play and video watching. One thing we noticed about the battery is that the drain is quite fast when you play HD games like Modern Combat 4, Frontline Commando D day etc.

Software, Benchmarks and Gaming

It has got slight amount of customizations which are running on top of android which makes icons looks different for some apps. There is slight amount of changes in the UI of certain apps like Phone Dialer, Messaging etc. The home screens and app drawer is also customized which can get laggy at times when you are running some heavy resource hungry apps and games in background. Amount of free RAM you get out of 1 Gb on the device is approx 500 MB which makes the User Interface responsive in beginning but it can get slightly slow with heavy processing. As far gaming performance is concerned, it can play casual, medium and heavy graphic games as well. We played Temple Run Oz, Frontline Commando d Day and Blood and Glory all these games ran fine without any major graphic lag however we noticed slight frame drops while playing some of these games.

Benchmark Scores

  • Quadrant Standard Edition: 8711
  • Antutu Benchmark: 16709
  • Nenamark2:  63.3 fps
  • Multi Touch: 2 point

Sound, Video and Navigation

The loudspeaker is more louder than as that of Moto E, but its placement at the rear back at the bottom does cause it get blocked at times with hand or when you place the Unite 2 on a flat surface while watching a video the sound will get muffled. We played HD videos at 720p and 1080p and both of the videos got played in the default video player without any audio and video sync issues. It can be used for GPS navigation with google maps, we tried locking the GPS it get locked in 2-3 minutes inside indoors and outdoors it took less than a minute to fix the GPS coordinates.

What We Liked

  • Rear Auto Focus Camera
  • Front Camera
  • Removable Battery
  • Bigger Display Size

What We Did Not Liked

  • Low screen resolution
  • Average Battery Backup

Others

When we tried connecting a USB Flash drive with a cable, it detected it but we could not read the contents of flash drive with default file manager app on the device and we could do the same with third party file managers, which indicates that this phone has limited OTG support. The Battery on Unite 2 is removable which is still better than non removable battery in case long term usage scenario and it has touch capacitive buttons on the body on the front bottom because of which display resolution is not affected and full screen game play and video watching becomes much easy to control and use.

Conclusion and Price

Micromax Unite 2 is the latest entry into the market, it is available both online and offline at Rs. 6999. It gives a great fight in terms of the specs to popular Moto E which is also selling online only on flipkart for the same price. Unite 2 does lead compared to the Moto E on the camera which is the weak point in case of Moto E but apart from that some other things like fast battery drain and average battery backup is some thing which seems to be the reason users should worry for, but hopefully that can be fixed through a software update patch or using some power saving apps. In all we would like to say that Unite 2 is more good points in comparison to Moto E for the same price which will make many users finally select Unite 2 for these reasons better rear camera, front camera, LED flash but some downsides are also there which is no so great display in terms of color reproduction and low screen resolution on a bigger display size but none of these reasons will be deal breaker for many users out there.
