Oplus XonPhone 5 Quick Review, Price and Comparison

Taiwanese manufacturer Oplus today launched its first smartphone, XonPhone 5 in India for 7,999 INR only and we did like what we saw at the launch event in New Delhi India. Earlier in January Oplus also launched XonPad 7 tablet at competitive price which we liked. Market has evolved manifolds in last few months, so let’s sees if the new Oplus device will click for budget conscious buyers.

Camera and Internal Storage

The Rear camera is a decent 8 MP shooter aided by LED Flash capable of recording full HD 1080P videos. The camera sensor comes with a bump which usually hints to Optical Image Stabilization, but at this price that’s not a viable option. Oplus has however provided with EIS and a 2 MP front facing shooter which is also an average performer. We liked Xiaomi Redmi 1S to be better in this department, but the imaging department is decent.

Internal storage is quite impressive at 16 GB out of which 9.5 GB is available at user’s end. There are some 3 GB + of preloaded apps and content and option for MicroSD card storage up to 32 GB.

Processor and Battery

XonPhone is powered by same chipset as the liked of Micromax Unite 2 with 1.3 GHz Cortex A7 based MT6582 quad core aided by 1 GB RAM for smooth multi tasking. We did notice slight amount of UI lag which might worsen in the long run, but first time Android users won’t notice much difference.

Battery capacity is 2000 mAh which can last for 15 hours of talk time and 300 hours of standby time. This doesn’t sound very impressive, but the good thing is that the battery is removable. We expect this to struggle to last one day with moderate usage.

Display and Other Features

The Display is 5 inches in size and poses 720p HD resolution. It also combines IPS LCD and OGS technology for closer display. The display sharpness, brightness and color reproduction was quite decent in our initial testing. The display is better than what we saw on Xiaomi Redmi 1S.

Other features include Dual SIM (Micro + Mini), HSPA+, Bluetooth 4.0, aGPS and WiFi. Micro USB port and Audio jack are both present at the top. On the software front, you will get customized Android 4.4.2 KitKat. The Android Skin on top wasn’t very appealing at first glance.

Comparison

XonPhone 5 which cruelly rhymes and competes with Zenfone 5, will also face tough competition from Zenfone 4.5, Micromax Unite 2, Xolo Q1011 and Xiaomi Redmi Note, Redmi 1s and Moto E in todays market. Other smartphones will definitely have a brand advantage, which significantly affects numbers.

Conclusion

XonPhone 5 is a decent budget android phone and we did like what we saw in shadow of the modest price tag. It will be a good device for first time Android users and will primarily compete with Redmi 1S once it is available for purchase. Oplus XonPhone will retail exclusively via Snapdeal, but it is advisable to check if the brand has a service center in your city before you buy it for 7,999 INR.
