Build Quality, Design and Form Factor

The build quality has nothing new on this phone its just like any other plastic phone you might have seen from samsung galaxy series earlier, this phone also have a glossy back cover with texture design make the device look more premium. The design is definitely no doubt inspired from Samsung S4 as it looks like the S4 Mini in all sorts. The form factor of this phone is quite good with 107 grams of weight which make one of the lightest phone to carry and the width of the phone is right in size so that it fits perfectly into any palm, the device thickness is also quite ok at 8.9 mm which does make it thinnest but again it does not feel like too thick or bulky device in anyway.

Display, Memory and Battery Backup

The display has 4.3 inch Super AMOLED capacitive touchscreen with 540 x 960 pixels, 4.3 inches (~256 ppi pixel density) which make it good enough that you wont see the pixels with naked eyes and the viewing angles is also quite good if not the widest we have seen. It has 8Gb internal storage with around 5 Gb available to the user, it does have a MicroSD memory card slot which is below the battery which make not hot swappable and it can accept upto 32Gb card max but you cannot install apps on the SD card before you root the device. The battery backup is more than 1 day with moderate usage.

Camera Performance

The rear camera is 8 MP with autofocus which can take very good shots in day light photos but in low light we could see little amount  of noise in the photos, check out the camera samples below. The front camera is 1.9 MP fixed focus which can be used for video chat and video calls but the video feed will be good enough to do a HD video chat or call.

Software, Benchmarks and Gaming

The software UI is Nature UX UI which is running on top of android with all those features which are part of this UI, although occasionally the UI might be slow in transitions. The gaming performance of the device is great due to around 700 MB of RAM which does limit the gaming experience a bit, heavy games like Frontline Commando D Day can ran fine without any issues. The benchmark scores are good, check out the scores below.

Benchmark Scores

  • Quadrant Standard Edition:  6990
  • Antutu Benchmark: 20212
  • Nenamark2:  60 @ fps
  • Multi Touch:  8 point

Sound, Video and Navigation

Sound which comes form the loud speaker quite loud, we did not faced any issues and sound from the earphones is also of good quality. The device can play HD videos at 720p and 1080p without any audio or video lag. The device can be used for Navigation as well with the help of assisted GPS but make sure to enable the same under location settings.

Conclusion and Price

S4 mini is a decent handy phone with some great hardware and has good screen which does not look so small or large and physical dimensions makes it more easy to use and portable enough to carry. The only downside as per us is qHD resolution which could have been better and display size of the device is also lesser specially at this price point of Rs. 24,690 but for those who are looking for mini version of s4 it does make some sense.
