Google Pixel 2, Pixel 2 XL launched: Specs, Indian pricing and more

Google today launched this year’s Pixel lineup at an event held in San Francisco. The Pixel series included the Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL and they succeed last year’s Pixel and Pixel XL. Both, the Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL come with the similar specifications, except in terms of display and battery.

Apart from the Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL, Google also launched the Pixelbook, Home Mini, Home Max, Daydream View, Google Clips and Google Pixel Buds. The Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL will be available in Australia, Canada, Germany, India, UK and the US. The device will also be available in Italy, Singapore and Spain later this year.

The Google Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL run on Android 8.0 Oreo and Google has promised minimum 3 years of OS and security updates. The devices come with dual front speakers, always-on AMOLED displays and Active Edge. As reported earlier, Google has ditched the 3.5mm audio jack.

The Pixel 2 comes with a 5 inch full HD AMOLED display with a resolution of 1920 x 1080 pixels and an aspect ratio of 16:9. It comes with a 2.5D Corning Gorilla Glass 5. The Pixel 2 XL comes with a 6 inch near edge-to-edge quad HD+ pOLED display with a resolution of 2880 x 1440 pixels and an aspect ratio of 18:9. It comes with a 3D Corning Gorilla Glass 5. The devices come with a pixel density of ~441 PPI and ~538 PPI respectively.


Coming to performance, both, the Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL are powered by an Octa core Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 processor with Adreno 540 GPU clubbed with 4GB RAM and 64GB / 128GB of internal storage.

The devices also come with unlimited online storage for photos and videos. Users will get original-quality storage for photos and videos taken with Pixel until 15 Jan 2021 and after that, they will be able to store devices in high-quality.

Coming to the camera department, the Google Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL come with a dual pixel sensor, HDR+ and a portrait mode. The devices feature a 12.2MP primary camera with EIS, OIS, 1.4μm pixel size, Autofocus with laser + dual pixel phase detection, f/1.8 aperture, an LED flash and support for 4K recording. On the front, the devices will sport an 8MP secondary camera with 1.4 μm and f/2.4 aperture. It must be noted that the Pixel 2 has recorded the highest ever rating of 98 on DxOMark.

Both the device also come with the AI-powered object recognition platform, Google Lens. It can detect phone numbers, food, art, movies and other things and provide you with relevant information. As reported earlier, the Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL also come with a feature similar to the HTC U11’s Edge Sense, which google has named as Active Edge. Squeezing the edges of the device will launch the Google Assistant.

The Google Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL come with Daydream support, IP67 certified water and dust resistance, front-firing stereo speakers, Wireless HD audio with LDAC, Qualcomm AptX and AptX HD and three microphones. As Google has not provided a 3.5mm audio jack, the devices will ship with a USB-C to 3.5 mm headphone adaptor.

The Google Pixel 2 is powered by a 2,700mAh battery and the Pixel 2 XL comes with a 3,520mAh battery. Both the devices can be used for up to 7 hours with just 15 minutes of charging. Connectivity options on the devices include 4G VoLTE, Wi-Fi 802.11a/b/g/n/ac, Bluetooth 5.0, USB Type-C port, GPS, Glonass, BeiDou and NFC.

Pricing and Availability

The pre-orders for the Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL begin on October 26. The Pixel 2 is scheduled to go on sale in India on November 1 and the Pixel 2 XL will be available from November 15. The device will be sold by over 1,000 retail stores across the country and will be available online exclusively from Flipkart.

The Google Pixel 2 has been priced at Rs. 61,000 for the 64GB internal storage variant and Rs. 70,000 for the 128GB internal storage variant. It will be available in Just Black, Clearly White and Kinda Blue color options.

The Google Pixel 2 XL has been priced at Rs. 73,000 for the 64GB internal storage variant and Rs. 82,000 for the 128GB internal storage variant. It will be available in Just Black and Black and White color options.

During the event, Google had announced that the newly launched Pixel devices will ship with a free Google Home Mini. However, this freebie is limited to Australia, Canada, Germany, UK and US and will not be available to Indian buyers.
