Micromax, Karbonn and Celkon to Put 750 Cr Under “Make in India” Initiative

Indian smartphone manufacturers Micromax, Karbonn and Celkon are going to take Make in India initiative, which urges the multinational and national companies to manufacture their products in India to the next level. All three smartphone makers have reached an agreement to invest INR 750 Cr for setting up a manufacturing unit at Andhra Pradesh.

The new manufacturing units will be set up at the upcoming industrial park on the outskirts of Tirupati, near Renigunta airport as per the agreements signed by the smartphone makers with the State Government.
Kartikeya Mishra, industries head of Andhra Pradesh has informed that State Government is in talks with other smartphone and accessories makers like Lava and Intex.

Mr. Mishra also said that Government is trying to facilitate smartphone makers to manufacture at least 7 million smartphones a month. These smartphones will be manufactured at Foxconn’s facility at Sri City and the one owned by Micromax, Karbonn and Celkon at Tirupati.Chinese smartphone giant, Xiaomi has entered in partnership with Taiwanese manufacturer Foxconn to manufacture smartphones at Sri City.

Micromax is planning to manufacture smartphones, tablets, LED TV’s and computer monitors at the Tirupati facility, with this huge investment. Initially, Celkon would be focusing more on manufacturing SKD (Semi- Knocked Down) handsets and CDK (Completely Knocked Down) handsets.

Apart from Indian manufacturers, some international brands like Vivo, HTC, Microsoft, LG, Motorola, Asus and Gionee have been planning to set up their smartphone manufacturing units in India.

With these recent announcements we expect to see a stiff competition in the smartphone segment. It is a win-win situation for the customers as many brands will be launching handsets with high-end features at affordable prices.
