OnePlus 3 receives Android Oreo update in a closed beta group

OnePlus has started pushing out a new update to the OnePlus 3. The update which is for a closed beta group brings Android 8.0 Oreo to the OnePlus 3. The update is not stable yet and a more stable build will be released sometime in mid-September. Also, the OnePlus 3T and OnePlus 5 too will also get the update soon, according to reports.

OnePlus has always been fairly quick when it comes to updating its smartphones to the latest Android update. The company’s OxygenOS which features stock-like interface is a big advantage of this is that updates are much easier to push out.

Now, the company has started rolling out the Android 8.0 Oreo update to OnePlus 3 Closed beta users. Interestingly, the company has already announced that Android Oreo 8.0 will be the last OS update for OnePlus 3 and 3T. For now, he Oreo update won’t be coming to all users at once, but some users get the update for testing purpose.

The update is not yet stable which means NFC isn’t functional yet, Wi-Fi is buggy, hotspot and Bluetooth are also unstable, and so on.  Moreover, the camera also doesn’t work, which is again not surprising. For the camera to work, the camera blobs will need to be “shimmed” to work on the latest Android version. To clarify, shimming is the process in which the device blobs are translated from a previous Android version to the new one.

The Chinese company is aiming to roll out the stable build by mid-September. And the public beta update is expected to arrive by the end of September. It is to be mentioned that the OnePlus 3T and OnePlus 5 closed beta groups are also expected to get the Oreo update also very soon. And the time-frame for their stable builds is same as that of the OnePlus 3, which is mid-September.

So, OnePlus is probably going to be amongst the first few companies to offer an Oreo update to its users. Also, the list of devices receiving Android Oreo has become more extensive with OnePlus flagships.
