Xiaomi Redmi 2 with 64 bit Chipset and 4G LTE Launched at $113

Xiaomi has officially introduced the successor of its best selling smartphone, Xiaomi Redmi 1S, dubbed as Xiaomi Redmi 2. This new 64 bit smartphone includes a 64 bit chipset, along with 4G LTE support, while other specifications remain almost similar to Redmi introduced in India last year.

The Xiaomi Redmi 2 has the same 4.7 Inch IPS LCD display with 720p HD resolution and is powered by 64 bit Snapdragon 410 chipset based on power efficient ARMv8 architecture. There is same 1GB RAM with 8 GB internal storage backing the chipset.

For now, the Redmi 2 is running Android 4.4 Kitkat based MIUI6 ROM, which means, the software won’t be able to take advantage of modern 64 bit architecture. Nevertheless, Xiaomi has already confirmed that it will be updating all smartphones to Lollipop, by the end of first quarter of 2015.

Imaging hardware includes an 8 MP F2.2 BSI sensor rear camera with LED flash and a slightly bigger 2 MP sensor (compared to Redmi 1S) at the front. Other features include MicroSD card slot, 4G LTE, 3G and a 2200 mAh battery.

Xiaomi Redmi 2 is not a major overhaul, but it is a significant update to its predecessor, which will be available for almost the same price.

Xiaomi Redmi 2 will be available in White, Dark gray, Bright Yellow, Light Green and Pink colour variants starting from 9th January in China, for a price of 699 Yuan ($113 or Approx 7,000 INR). Xiaomi hasn’t announced any details for global rollout just yet.
