Xiaomi Redmi 5, Redmi 5 Plus launched with 18:9 display, Snapdragon processor

Chinese smartphone maker Xiaomi has just launched the new Xiaomi Redmi 5 and Redmi 5 Plus with 18:9 aspect ratio displays. The phones come with minimal bezels and will be offered in gold, rose gold, light blue, and black color options.

The devices have been launched in China and are anticipated to make their way to India soon. The design of the Xiaomi Redmi 5 and Redmi 5 Plus is inspired by the Xiaomi Mi Mix 2. Both the phones are backed by Snapdragon processors with the Redmi 5 Plus arriving with a Snapdragon 625 chipset.

The two new phones in the Redmi lineup will compete in the mid-range smartphone market here. The Xiaomi Redmi 5 comes with a 5.7-inch display with HD+ resolution. The bigger Redmi 5 Plus features a 5.99-inch Full HD+ resolution display. Both the phones come with 18:9 aspect ratio displays.

In terms of optics, the Redmi 5 features a 12MP main camera and a 5MP front-facing unit. The Redmi 5 Plus also features similar configuration. Both phones have rear as well as front flash but the Redmi 5 Plus gets always-on selfie flash while recording videos in low light.

In the hardware department, both phones come with Snapdragon processors, which is a good thing. While the Redmi 5 is packing a Snapdragon 450 processor, the Redmi 5 Plus features a Snapdragon 625 processor. The Redmi 5 comes in 2GB/16GB and 3GB/32GB models while the Redmi 5 Plus will get 3GB/32GB and 4GB/64GB storage variants.

Coming to performance, both the Xiaomi Redmi 5 and Redmi 5 Plus come with the latest MIUI 9 backed by Android Nougat. Both phones feature a special gaming acceleration mode for a better gaming experience.

The Redmi 5 is backed by a 3,300mAh battery while the Redmi 5 Plus is packing a massive 4,000mAh battery. The Redmi 5 Plus is claimed to come with 17 days of standby time, which is good.

Pricing and Availability

The Xiaomi Redmi 5 and Redmi 5 Plus come at a starting price of 799 Yuan, which translates to Rs. 7,790, making them ones of the most affordable phones with Snapdragon hardware and 18:9 aspect ratio. The phones will go on sale in China starting from December 12.
