Micromax Yu Yureka Long Review, Camera, Benchmarks, Price, Cyanogen User Interface Overview[Video]

Design, Build and Display

Yureka lists a moonstone finish for the rear cover. This is in no way similar to the sandstone finish on the rear side of 64 GB OnePlus One, even if the name suggests otherwise. It’s basically a textured Matte finish back cover.

The phone is light in weight, but doesn’t endeavor to shave off bezels. Over all foot print lies on the higher side of the spectrum if you compare it to other 5.5 Inch smartphones. The build quality is pretty good considering the price range, but don’t expect a OnePlus One feel. Body thickness lies in the range of 6 mm to 8 mm, with the maximum girth at the center.

The display size is 5.5 Inches and the display looks sharp enough with 1280 x 720 pixels spread across it. The brightness and viewing angles are good, but the colors are slightly off. When compared side by side with Redmi Note, we found Redmi Note to have a better display. There is Gorilla Glass protection on top for protection against scratches.

Processor and RAM

image

Yureka is one of the first few phones to use Snapdragon 615 MSM8389 chipset, and we didn’t expect this at a sub 10k price anytime soon. The 64 bit mid range chipset has 4 cortex A53 cores clocked at 1.5 GHz and other 4 Cortex A53 cores clocked at 1 GHz. The main advantage to look forward to is power efficient ARMv8 based design. There is 2 GB DDR3 RAM inside out of which 1.3 GB is free on first boot. The cyanogens software is quite light and sails without any noticeable lag on this device.

Camera and Internal Storage

The 13 MP rear camera has a Sony Exmor sensor, with F2.2 aperture 5p lens and Blue filter for better light management. The rear camera performance was good, but not the best. We needed to keep our hands perfectly still to avoid motion blur. With all the highlighted camera hardware, we can only assume that software needs some improvement. The front 5 MP wide angle selfie camera is a decent performer.

Internal storage is 16 GB, out of which around 12 GB is available at user end. There is no separate partition for apps so you can use the available space as you please. You can also extend this further using MicroSD card slot.

User Interface and Battery

User interface is CyanogenMod 11 based on Android 4.4.4 KitKat. The company assured that they are working hard for Lollipop upgrade for Yureka. The software will be updated every month. The software is also different from what we have seen on OnePlus One. Customizations don’t run deep enough in Yureka. Since the software will be regularly updated keeping community feedback in mind, this shouldn’t be a problem at all. The UI is very smooth without any noticeable lag.

image

Battery capacity is 2500 mAh and Micromax claims this will last for 280 hours of standby and 8 hours of talk time. The company claims that software optimizations will save battery and the backup will be analogous to what you expect from a 3000 mAh battery. Micromax also higlighted its 24 bit audio setup in Yureka, but speaker loudness didn’t hit the right level for our taste in initial testing.

Conclusion

YU Yureka is indeed a value for money smartphone and future software updates will make it better. We do hope Cyanogen improves camera stabilization in the upcoming update. Though it sounds a little better on paper than in practice, it is indeed a great value for money device which won’t disappoint you at a price of 8,999 INR. Micromax is also offering a handcrafted leather case bundled inside as an introductory offer. You can buy Yureka exclusively from Amazon.in and registration for the same starts tomorrow 2 PM.
