The mid-range smartphone segment is highly dominated with the likes of Samsung, Micromax, Karbonn, Motorola and other vendors that are constantly releasing solid devices to grab the attention of consumers. To join this race, Philips has announced a trio of smartphones including the S308, W3500 and W6610. Talking about the W3500 is a quad-core smartphone that comes with standard specifications and here we analyze the capabilities of the handset.
Camera and Internal Storage
The Philips W3500 packs a 5 MP primary snapper with LED flash that can capture basic videos of 480p resolution and a 2 MP front-facing snapper to assist in making video calls. Given the price range of the smartphone, this basic camera set is a downside for those willing to capture decent quality snaps and videos on their mid-range phone. Further, the other smartphones in this price bracket include at least an 8 MP primary camera that is acceptable.
When it comes to storage, the Philips W3500 bundles a standard 4 GB of internal memory space that can be extended further up to a maximum limit of 32 GB. For a mid-ranger, 4 GB of native storage capacity is pretty low despite the presence of additional storage support.
Processor and Battery
As mentioned above, the W3500 is stuffed with a quad-core processor ticking at 1.3 GHz clock speed. This quad-core chipset is coupled with 1 GB of RAM that results in efficient multi-tasking. Many other mid-range smartphones in the market also come with such hardware aspects and hence, there is no issue in this regard. However, the performance of the handset in real time is still unknown.
A 2,200 mAh battery powers the Philips W3500 from within and though the backup delivered by the same remains undisclosed, it is believed to provide decent life to the smartphone under mixed usage.
Display and Features
Philips has given the W3500 a standard 5 inch display that boasts of a FWVGA screen resolution of 480×854 pixels and a low pixel density of 196 pixels per inch. As the large screen has a low resolution, there are chances for the content to appear a bit stretched out. Comparing with the other smartphones in this price range, the competitors come with a minimum of HD resolution that could have been better.
The Philips W3500 is based on Android 4.2 Jelly Bean operating system and it packs a slew of standard connectivity options such as Wi-Fi, 3G, Bluetooth, GPS and dual SIM functionality.
Comparison
Based on the specs and price range, the Philips W3500 will definitely compete with Sony Xperia C, Micromax Canvas 2 A120 Colors, Karbonn Titanium S5 Plus and Lenovo P780.

Price and Conclusion
The Philips W3500 priced at Rs 16,195 is too expensive for its capabilities. The handset misses out on a high resolution, better photography capabilities and enhanced internal storage space. It has to be noted that its competitors would definitely fare well as they include all these aspects. However, it is the performance of this device that will decide its abilities.
