Vivo APEX is a concept smartphone half screen fingerprint sensor

#GTUMWC2018: As the MWC nears, the advent of launches and new concepts is catching pace. This time, it is the Vivo APEX that has surfaced as the latest concept of bezel-less smartphone from the Chinese manufacturer.

Vivo is already established as one of the first brands to incorporate an under-display fingerprint sensor on the Vivo X20 Plus UD, and now, the company has come up with another concept device which will be the world’s first phone to have a half screen fingerprint sensor.

About the Vivo APEX

Vivo APEX

The video from Vivo shown on Weibo shows the device with minimal bezels on the front. This looks inspired from the Xiaomi Mi Mix flagship which has the display stretching to the top of the device. The Vivo APEX Concept is teased with no bezels on the front. The phone is announced to feature a top and side bezel of 1.8mm and a bottom bezel just 4.3mm. There is also a chance that the device will feature a 98% screen-to-body ratio.

In the teaser, the tagline says ‘Unlock the Future’ which unmistakably points at the under-display fingerprint sensor. The Vivo X20 Plus UD is already equipped with an under display fingerprint sensor from Synaptics, and the company may bring the same to the Vivo APEX concept. This marks towards the half-screen fingerprint sensor which means the bottom half of the device will be a fingerprint scanner.

The Concept also equips an 8MP Retractable camera that rises and retracts in 8.8 seconds when you want to use it. We can spot a slight chin on the phone along with an earpiece on top. Apart from these slight areas, we can expect a full-view display on the device.

Also, there is no word about the specifications of the Vivo APEX. Since the teaser also calls it a ‘Concept’ we may not get to see a production-ready variant of the smartphone. This could very well be a demo just like that of the X20 Plus UD on the CES last year.

Alex Feng, Senior Vice President, Vivo, commented,

“APEX is an iteration of our constant pursuit of setting new industry standards and to deliver the ultimate mobile experience. From breakthroughs in audio, photography to In-Display Fingerprint Scanning Technology, Vivo has remained committed to realizing our vision for future smartphones. What we showcase in this concept phone is only a fraction of our innovation pipeline. We will continue to explore all possibilities to bring the best possible experiences to our consumers.”
