Indian state-owned telco Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) and HMD Global led Nokia have signed a Network Modernisation agreement under which Nokia will help BSNL set up their 4G VoLTE network in the South and West zone in India.

The partnership with Nokia for BSNL 4G VoLTE rollout is expected to help the company to compete with the private sector operators like Airtel, Vodafone, and Jio. While Nokia and BSNL have already signed an MoU for development of 5G applications in the country, this new partnership will help in rapid expansion of BSNL’s 4G coverage.

BSNL has also partnered with Adpay to make India’s first Mobile Virtual Network Operator (MVNO), Aerovoyce, which is scheduled to come later. Now the telco has signed an agreement with Nokia which will deploy Single Radio Access Network (SRAN) software to ease the set up and operational cost of 4G network for BSNL.

The service will be deployed to ten telecom circles i.e. Maharashtra, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Goa, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Kerala and Telangana. BSNL currently enjoys a user base of 38 million subscribers and may expand to bigger cities in future.

Anupam Shrivastava, Chairman and Managing Director of BSNL commented, “Hunger for consistent change and innovation provides the fuel to drive us towards excellence. With this in our core, we are striving to offer the best in class network speed, coverage and capacity using the best technology available.”

Sanjay Malik, head of India Market at Nokia said, “We are pleased to continue our longstanding relationship with BSNL on this important project in India. The deployment of our technologies will enable BSNL to launch exciting new voice and data services, satisfying growing demand in India.”
