Open AI, the company behind ChatGPT has made it clear since the beginning that it records every interaction you have with ChatGPT. For this, they use the chat history feature to improve the language model. Though they have assured that this data will only be used for training purposes, many users consider it a privacy concern. Due to this concern, OpenAI has released a new option to disable chat history. So in this article, we will go over how to enable and use the Incognito mode in ChatGPT along with a couple of other methods to hide your ChatGPT conversation history.
What Is the “Incognito Mode” in ChatGPT?
When a new conversation is started with ChatGPT, it is added to the chat history column on the left side of the window. ChatGPT automatically gives it a title based on the context of the chat.
This allows you to easily browse through your previous interactions with ChatGPT and find its responses. Open AI can use these conversations in chat history for improvements and training purposes.
But now there is an option to disable the chat history feature from the settings. This essentially enables what one employee at Open AI called, the “incognito mode”. Your chat history does not get saved and therefore, Open AI cannot use this data for internal testing. You can re-enable it anytime.
Note: All your conversations in this incognito mode get deleted automatically after 30 days.
Method 1 – Enable Incognito Mode to Hide Chat History
Now that we have discussed the incognito mode feature and how it works, let us take a look at the steps to enable it in an active ChatGPT session.
1. Visit the ChatGPT website on a browser and log in with your Open AI account.
2. Click on the three-dot menu next to the username in the bottom left corner.
3. Select the Settings option.
4. Click on the Show button next to Data Controls.
5. Turn off the toggle for Chat History & Training.
This will disable chat history and it will be greyed out. The textbox will also turn to a darker color.
6. To disable ChatGPT incognito mode, click on Enable chat history from the left side menu.
Method 2 – Download Hide ChatGPT Sidebar Extension
Hide ChatGPT Sidebar is a Chrome extension that helps you hide your ChatGPT history by hiding the left sidebar where all the conversations are listed. This prevents others from snooping into your conversation history with ChatGPT. This is how you can set it up.
1. Download the Hide ChatGPT Sidebar extension from the Chrome Web Store.
2. Head over to an active ChatGPT session.
3. Here click on the extension icon.
4. Next, click on the Hide ChatGPT Sidebar extension.
5. Click on Toggle Sidebar to hide or show the ChatGPT sidebar.
This will hide the left sidebar from the ChatGPT window.
Method 3 – Use ChatGPT Without Signing In
Your chat history is tied to your OpenAI account, so logging in to ChatGPT will bring up all your previous conversations. But you can avoid that by using an extension like Merlin, which does not require logging in to ChatGPT.
Merlin lets you access ChatGPT with the web and even GPT 4 for free. It requires sign-in, but you can use any other account, and it will not ask you to sign in to ChatGPT. Here is how you can use it.
1. Download the Merlin AI extension from Chrome Web Store.
2. Once downloaded, visit a webpage where you want to use the Merlin AI.
3. Click on the extension icon in the Chrome toolbar.
4. Select the Merlin AI extension.
5. Now, click on Sign In.
You can use the same email address as your ChatGPT account or even a different one here. Either way, Merlin will not use it to sign you into your ChatGPT account.
6. Now, you can start asking queries from Merlin without worrying about your chat history being seen.
