How to Learn Faster using ChatGPT’s Study Mode

How to Learn Faster using ChatGPT’s Study Mode

Quick Answer

  • We tested the new mode in ChatGPT, and all the members in our team got jealous as we remembered how we had to visit the library to read journals, but these new AI tools have made it so easy.
  • The best part was that the diagram was conceptually correct, and it made it easier to understand the topic due to the visual representation.
  • To test it further, we asked ChatGPT to explain equipotential forces in a dipole, with a diagram.

When it comes to students using ChatGPT, the tool is notorious for being used as a cheating method for assignments, tests, and other projects. But did you know that OpenAI recently introduced a Study Mode? It can break down complex topics, explain mathematical problems, genuinely help you learn new topics, and even summarize your lengthy and boring notes.

We tested the new mode in ChatGPT, and all the members in our team got jealous as we remembered how we had to visit the library to read journals, but these new AI tools have made it so easy. Hence, we also approached a few Class 12th students to gain their insights on how they felt using ChatGPT in their learning. Here’s how it went.

Study Mode in ChatGPT

How to use ChatGPT Study Mode

The study mode is available in the free version of ChatGPT to all users. It also uses the latest GPT-5 model, based on your daily limits. Follow these steps to use it:

1. On desktop, open chatgpt.com and click on the + icon. Select Study and learn.

enable study mode in ChatGPT

2. If you are using the smartphone app, tap on the media button and choose Study and learn.

3. Ensure that you see the Study label in the textbox to confirm that the Study Mode has been enabled.

verify Study Mode in enabled in ChatGPT

4. ChatGPT will now generate answers specifically to help you in your studies by breaking down its responses into parts and providing step-by-step explanations.

ChatGPT Study Mode: Reviewed by a Student

We asked a class 12th science student to use the Study Mode in ChatGPT and get real-world insights into how it really benefits students. To begin with, we uploaded the complete Physics textbook and asked the chatbot to analyse it in detail.

uploading textbook in ChatGPT

First, we asked ChatGPT to list out the important topics to study from an exam perspective. Within a minute, ChatGPT generated a list of necessary topics, including individual definitions from a chapter that one must study for the subject. When we compared this list to the one provided by the school professor, the topics were almost the same, with a 90% similarity. In simple words, ChatGPT was able to accurately pick specific segments from a textbook that are important for a particular subject.

To test it further, we asked ChatGPT to explain equipotential forces in a dipole, with a diagram. While this is a simple topic, it is difficult to explain it without previous context, making this a crucial test. The chatbot first responded with an explanation of the topic, followed by a step-by-step derivation of the equation and formula.

Interestingly, instead of generating an image, which takes more time, ChatGPT created a diagram using symbols like slashes, hyphens, and brackets to explain the concept. The best part was that the diagram was conceptually correct, and it made it easier to understand the topic due to the visual representation.

We also pushed it further by instructing ChatGPT to draw a 2D image, which it did. However, this request took almost 5-7 minutes, which we feel was not worth. However, the symbol-based diagram was an excellent method by ChatGPT to fulfill the request, without exhausting daily GPT limits.

We also noticed that ChatGPT automatically switched to GPT-5 for complex topics, and went back to GPT-4 while responding to simpler questions. The entire test was done using the free version, so this was highly impressive considering that ChatGPT was saving its GPT-5 queries from our daily limits, instead of using them quickly for straightforward responses.

ChatGPT was also able to solve numerical problems and explain them with individual steps. Overall, the study mode felt more detailed and contextual compared to regular ChatGPT. Instead of just trying to wrap the answer quickly, ChatGPT responds in a slow, steady, and explanatory manner with the study mode.

As a final review, the student was highly impressed with the Study Mode in ChatGPT. When compared to other tools like Brainly, or manually looking for explanations on Google, Reddit, or other forums, ChatGPT made it easier to target a specific topic and obtain detailed explanations, making it a genuinely helpful tool for studying.
