Samsung Galaxy J5 is the latest addition to the affordable J series from Samsung. Last year we saw Galaxy J5 and Galaxy J7 doing consistently well in Indian markets, and Samsung has continued the range with the new smartphones.
Samsung Galaxy J5 (2016) is a great phone overall, and we really liked the overall package in our initial hands on experience. There are few shortcoming in the phone but the quality of features and Samsung’s brand value has done it again.

It comes with the following contents inside the box:
- USB 2.0
- 2-pin Charger
- User manual & Warranty card
The Samsung Galaxy J5 (2016) comes packed in a good looking shell that also feels very sturdy to hold. It comes with a slight addition in the design features this time. Samsung has used metal on the sides, and the sides are rounded in shape to give it a better grip. Samsung has used a removable plastic back panel which comes with a brushed metal finish. The display size is 5.2 inches which makes it perfect to use with one hand but users with small hands may struggle to get a better grip at times.
You will find the front camera, front LED flash, proximity sensor and the speaker grill on the front top of the phone.
Bottom has the physical home button and capacitive navigation keys on the left and right.
On the back, you will find the primary camera on the top and it has LED flash on its right. Another notable change is with the speaker grill, which looks different and more durable.
USB port and 3.5mm audio jack is at the bottom with the microphone hole.
Volume rocker is on the left,
And power/lock button is on the right hand side of the J5.
As we stated in our introduction, the Galaxy J5 has a lot of elements to it that are traditionally Samsung. The UI of the Galaxy J5 majorly symbolizes this fact. It remains a skinned version of Android 6.0 Marshmallow with Samsung’s TouchWiz interface atop it. This means that while the phone may seem snappy and animations/transitions are carried out smoothly initially, as time progresses one and you load the J5 with apps, performance is sure to take a dip. This happens due to the fact that the phone has more work to do, more tasks to manage simultaneously as you install apps, games, services or load media onto the phone.
Samsung Galaxy J5 (2016) Gaming Performance
To test the gaming performance, I played Dead Trigger 2 on the Galaxy J5. Before starting the game, I changed the graphic level to highest and then turned the brightness to max (just to get an idea of battery consumption). The game play in the initial stages was buttery smooth, I thought I should have installed Asphalt 8 to test the limits, but very soon I noticed tiny frame drops in the later stages. The game was still playable, but for sometime, it surprised me as I did not expected this issue.
To be sure, I closed all the apps running in the background and played that level again. The results were better but I could still see some frame drops in between. The highest temperature I noted was 35 degrees, and the battery dropped 8% in 30 minutes of gaming.

Comparison & Competition
Looking at the overall offering of this phone, we are really impressed. It may not look the strongest on paper but Samsung has made sure to continue the same charm that we saw on last year’s J5. It has a very good camera, decent display and loyal after sales support. So, the ones who find it hard to trust on the Chinese competitors can surely put their money on this phone. As far as gaming is concerned, there are much better options for gamers.
